the 2011 draft was so freaking bad

was just looking it over. actually i should say OUR draft was bad. because that 1st round was pretty miraculous. like 20 picks had their 5th year options picked up. a lot of guys who are top 5-10 at their positions. and only three of the players are on different teams now i think. ANYWAY.

cam newton - beast, only good pick

terrell mcclain - has been on four teams, might make cowboys roster since their DL is so bad

sione fua - cut, brought back to change positions, cut again, now on denver

brandon hogan - had some decent playtime iirc, was cut, now in the CFL with the blue bombers

kealoha pilares - good rookie year, meh 2nd year, injured/waived to get stashed on IR, probably not making team this year

lawrence wilson - busted with weed so we cut him, now with bears

zack williams - dont think he ever played a snap, not even in preseason, currently with the orlando predators (AFL?)

lee ziemba - cut after second preseason, now on the colts

ugh.

at least hurney gave us a nice parting gift with kuechly, silatolu, and nortman. and the g-man gave us like five future defensive starters in one draft/udfa signing period. yay getting better.

Hogan was supposed to be a top rated CB but fell because of injury.   I honestly don't ever remember seeing him on the field.

2011 I believe we sat him the whole season just to make sure that bowl game injury had heal.  Then he got hurt again.  I think.

Hit a grand slam first time up and then struck out miserably afterwards.

all i remember about hogan was in late 2011 against the texans he pushed kevin walter out of bounds, stopped covering him, which left walter wide open for a TD. really good heads up play bc yates zeroed in on him instead of other options and it led to a flag.

that's it. i don't remember him making any bad plays the next week or two. pretty sure the week 17 shellacking was because of sherrod martin. god, he was so fuging miserable that year. then his replacement was haruki. ugh.

McClain and Fua basically were need picks, picks that Gettleman would never have made. DL has basically been almost completely depleted by that point in the draft. Even though it was highly touted as a great DL draft, in the end that can work against you to wait until later as everybody else cashes in on the talent. If you read my posts then you'd understand that in no way am i suggesting we should've picked a DL instead of Cam, but I'm wary of a similar situation happening with WR this year. Could be slim pickens by the third round.

Hogan, Pilares, Wilson, they were all nonsensical picks to me. Pilares probably would not have been drafted if we didn't take him and what the hell could you have possibly seen in a 225 lb linebacker that made you think it would make up for the lack of size where the big boys play. And of course to round out your 2011 draft you have your obligatory late round Hurney OL picks to go along with your mid round lousy Hurney DT prospect that will get shithoused pick

Only thing I remember is him getting in trouble for pissing in public.

    • Ha-ha, I bet that went through everyone's mind.  Admittedly I don't read all the comments in a thread before I make a post. Great minds think alike!
    • Cam was hitting his stride as a QB in 2017/2018.     This is why I think stats like completion percentage are overrated. As long as a QB is clutch and makes the throws to win the game the rest doesn’t really matter. What good is a check down stat padder if they’re a choker.  Until Norv Turner (and briefly Chud) got here we put Cam in high pressure throwing situations all the time. We also ran the ball on first down more than most teams in the NFL in the Ron era. Coupled with shitty WRs, all that is expressed in his stats. I also assume Cam took the ball in his hands on many occasions rather than trust Funchess to catch the ball.    It was also never Cams job to play the game like someone else. His presence on the field dictated the game in a way that is rarely seen.  He showed he could play the dink and dunk game just before TJ Watt. That didn’t suddenly make him better than his earlier seasons. He just got put in a legit under center  passing game again for first time since his rookie year with Chud.    Ron took the quickest path to success and abused the RPO because his ass was about to get fired.    Cam never got the credit for being the cerebral player that he was. I just think when you are legitimately a human Superman, sometimes the best play is having the ball in your hands. He was a better passer than Delhomme was.
    • I don't think Canales has any problem benching Bryce or moving on if Bryce doesn't come out playing like the end of last year.  It's year 3 no more excuses for Bryce
