The Charlotte hornets draft... Jabari Parker

Yes u heard that right. Not a mishap.

The thread mentioning if u would give up 8 players to draft a qb in the panthers thread got me to thinking.

We need that star. We need that franchise player. We need that lebron.... Kevin love.... Melo.... That Jabari Parker.

Why not give up some of our future to get it. Even if it does take a lot. We can't get big name players to sign anyway. We can lure superstars. So the only way to start is by drafting our own.

So trade this: the portland 24 overall pick, the Detroit pick. And a future first. Hell even 2 future firsts. Throw in a player. Do what u gotta do. Surely that package with mkg is atleast enough to make a team atleast think twice.

Hell with our drafting luck we might as well go ahead and get the sure thing.

Them we can start signing players who want to come here. I beleive honestly in my heart I would do this kinda scenario. I know some will say its way too steep. Or not realistic. But how sweet would it be to have Jabari Parker in a hornets uniform for a long time.

Giving up 4 first round picks for Jabari would be beyond Marty Hurney levels of epic fail.

 

I would love to land Jabari on the Hornets, or Hood or TJ Warren, which is not something many Carolina fans will readily admit.  However, I disagree with you calling Jabari a "sure thing" without having seen him play against NBA competition.  I do not expect Parker to be a bust, but I wouldn't be surprised if Wiggins, Embiid and Exum or end up having better pro careers...the uncertainty of the draft is part of what makes it so exciting.

 

Perhaps I'm too much of a homer, but I believe MJ can lure a superstar to come to Charlotte.  We may need fans like several of the posters on this board to help turn the atmosphere of TWC into one of the best in the NBA, but it's not a huge stretch for a city that supported the former Hornets with 350+ consecutive sellouts in a larger arena.  Creating a top-notch home court environment is the last step to making Charlotte a desirable stop for superstars.  We have the money and cap space to afford a max contract player, we have a playoff caliber team already, we have the GOAT player as our owner, the only negative is that Charlotte is considered a small market city.

If we wanted a top pick we should have tanked. We've picked our path and should stick with it. We won't ever be more than first round fodder for the contenders, but at least we aren't a complete embarrassment anymore.

Can't say that I'm totally against this even though I normally would be. Moving up in the top 3-4 picks gives you that young almost certain future superstar. It's keeps the excitement level high for the fans going into the Hornets. Increases the team's chances if landing a good FA. Puts them in a position to win now, which means the first they would be trading away would be late first rounders anyway. I haven't really given it a complete analysis... But at first glance I could get on board with the idea

If we could land a top 3 pick in this draft , assuming we get Pistons pick at 9 , I would be all in for trading pistons pick , portlands pick and our future pick (dont know if we are able to trade next years first ) to get Parker . If we plan on picking good were looking at least a mid first for the next few years why not get the guy now with a good nucleus.

Why would a team in the top 3 make that trade?  They just spend an entire season tanking and telling their fans, "its ok, we're doing this to get a good player in the draft," now they're just going to flip that pick for more future picks?

 

This isnt the NFL, in the NBA a pick at the top of the 1st round (when there are good prospects available) are worth approximately 1000x more than a pick at the bottom of the first round.

You're selling the future for a chance to draft an unproven player

Free agency is the much safer route and you can build a team in free agency with Afflalo, Deng, and Nelson that would be a top five team in the East.

It's time to quit being so shortsighted and look at the big picture.

Risky? Without question. And that package may or may not get it done. But I'd think hard about doing it. Kemba, Jabari, Big Al and cap space could be a nice, nice roster. That said...it will never happen.

We have had top 5 picks in the past and those "sure thing" and "can't miss" picks didn't produce an elite superstar. So what makes you think some punk with one year of college experience is a franchise savior?

It's almost comical how y'all would gut a team for a supposed superstar that hasn't proved anything. Named one instance where a team gutted their franchise for a pick and it worked out in the end?

If the draft order stays as it currently is - Bucs (#1), 76ers (#2) and Magic (#3) - each of those teams need to find a future superstar, or at least a borderline all star type player to help their rebuilding project. They currently have the chance to Joel Embiid, Jabari Parker, Andrew Wiggins or Dante Exum. Those are the top four players that those three teams will likely target. Very high upside players. Potentially franchise changing players. So why would they give up the opportunity to draft one of those players?

 

I'm not convinced that one of the teams drafting in the top three would trade out of that position, especially when you consider what we can offer them. Here's a look at our future picks:

 

2014: (#24 - via Portland) and potentially Detroit's if it falls outside the top eight. 

2015: Detroit's first round pick, top one protected; our first round pick, and our second round pick.

2016: Our first round pick, our second round pick. 

2017 - onward: Same as above

 

Now okay rebuilding teams like to stockpile draft picks, but we don't really hold any high value picks to send their way. If we say Detroit play like they did this season, then gives us a lottery pick to trade away. But if they improve, that pick could become a late lottery pick or worse. And then we have our picks, which will probably be outside the lottery and likely in the #20s because the aim from here on out is to get better, not worse. So any deal would have to be something silly like this:

 

(2014 - #24) + (2015 - Detroit) + (2015 - Charlotte) + (2016 - Charlotte) + MKG?

 

Now that would be four firsts and perhaps a player. But those first round picks are unlikely to bring the Bucs, 76ers or Magic a superstar. They will probably land a solid player. But the odds on them landing a superstar at that point in the draft is unlikely. So I don't think they give up the chance to draft a superstar for what will likely be a bunch of draft picks in the #20s. Maybe I'm wrong, perhaps they will value three picks in the #20s and wherever Detroit's lands as a deal as too good to turn down. But I don't see it that way. I think we might even have to give up more than this to land Parker or Wiggins. And I don't think it would be worth it.
