Robert Mathis suspended 4 games

Recommended Posts

The strangest part of the story is thecommissioner never accepted to take a look at the medical evidence Mathis and his doctor were willing to provide?

The union has worked very closely with me to present all of the facts and medical records for consideration of discipline that does not include a suspension because of the unique facts of my case, but the Commissioner refused the request.

Not saying he isn't guilty but it strikes me as a little wrong not wanting to see all the evidence.  Comrade Goodell....

I am sure that the commissioner looked at all the evidence and took everything into consideration.  If he didn't then why isn't he appealing the decision like other players did in the star caps case or other situations where the feeling was that the NFL was wrong.  The only reason he isn't appealing it is because he knows he doesn't have a leg to stand on.

If his story is true, his doctor likely prescribed clomiphene citrate tablets. This is an off label use commonly prescribed to men to increase testicular output, which includes both sperm production and testosterone.

Is it bad I lol'd at the phrase "testicular output"?

This is at least the second time he has tested positive for a banned substance. They don't suspend players for a single violation.

If nothing else I find it a strange coincidence that he failed drug tests this year. He had 19.5 sacks at 32 years of age, coming off two of his least productive seasons ever. Even if it was nothing more than a fertility drug, which he says he only took at the end of the year, he's been busted at least once prior to that.

NFL told Mathis to STFU!

The NFL's statement on the matter, via TheRedZone.org, makes it clear that the league wasn't too pleased with the story Mathis was peddling:

“As Mr. Mathis’s agent acknowledged today, his client failed to follow the protocols in the policyarrow-10x10.png that the NFL and NFLPA agreed upon to address precisely these kinds of claims,” the NFL's statement said. “That policy also prescribes the disciplinary consequences of a positive test. The policy does not provide — nor should it provide — for the Commissioner to override the policy’s procedures and assess discipline on an after-the-fact, ad hoc basis. Here Mr. Mathis actually withdrew his appeal and accepted discipline at the union’s suggestion. His hearing took place only after the Players Association requested that the appeal be reinstated.

“The drug for which Mr. Mathis tested positive is not approved by the FDA for fertility in males and is a performance-enhancing drug that has been prohibited for years. Importantly, Mr. Mathis did not consult with the policy’s Independent Administrator, a physician jointly approved by the NFL and NFL Players Association. Nor did he consult with his team doctor, the team’s training staff, the NFLPA, the league office or the hotline established under the policy to give confidential information to players. Each of these sources would have warned against using this substance. A cornerstone of the program is that a player is responsible for what is in his body. Consistent applicationarrow-10x10.png of the policy’s procedures is critical to the integrity of the program.”

    • Things like this happen everyday. We live in a social media driven society where loyalty is a foreign concept.
    • If you draft a guy who is healthy and has no concerns about that whatsoever and he goes out and tears his ACL in his first few games in the regular season on a physical play that's a freak accident. But when you trade up to draft an RB who is already rehabbing from a recent ACL tear and he spends the next several months continuing his rehab only to tear the same ACL again after less than a handful of regular season carries in a non contact circumstance that is no freak accident. That is a textbook example of why you do not do what we did. Particularly for what is now a plug and play position. And when you have the highest paid OL in the league over the next two years. None of that makes any logical sense. Legitimately it is and was some Scott Fitterer type foolishness. Now as for XL. The guy has not been committed to his craft. I think anyone with eyes on the situation can and would recognize that. However the warning signs were there. One season of legit production raw prospect that we knew would take time to develop etc. But Morgan and Bryce Young's own father were very high on him. I think in some capacity the reality of our limitation at QB is entering into the equation. Even TMac got a lot of flak over the course of his rookie season for not being able to haul in all of Bryce's passes. At the end of the day our fourth year QB also needs to do his part to maximize the talent we have available. As far as this year. Again. WR round 1 boils down to where are we going to get the touches for the rookie? That would require eating into not only our 8th overall picks touches but also our #2 WR whom oh yeah by the way was UNDRAFTED. I am happy to discuss WR prospects here. I was thrilled we invested what we did last year in TMac because it needed to be done and it made sense from all angles. But nowhere is it written in stone that you cannot draft a good or great WR outside of the first round. Except in the Panthers building apparently. That is not a good reflection on our scouts and front office let me tell ya. Because there's no way on this earth we are going to get back to relevancy and legitimate contender status if we can't pick some gems in the later rounds. Simple and plain.
    • This is pretty accurate our offense needs more juice. I love Cooker but he’s not enough XL ummm we’ll see this year hopefully the third year WR thing hits him and he plays better but still not enough. Honestly we need look at the Eagles they just adds Wicks and Hollywood Brown to that core. That shows the level of talent needed to compete at a championship level this coming season. And this below is the real problem KC doesn’t seem to add that much to our offense. We Makai Lemon or defense at 19
