Free Agency Targets: Gordon Heyward

Recommended Posts

He's got a career FG% of 44% and a 3pt% of 37%.

I'd wager that those would go up with him not being the main option here. His first two seasons he shot over 46% from the field and over 40% from 3pt.

Nope, shot .346% from 3 in second year. Intact his overall shooting has dropped every year he has played. That is called a bad trend

Generally happens when you move up the option chart esp when your team around you is poo.

If Hayward is your 3rd option you have a DAMN good team.

No, that is an excuse. When Hendo was up the chart with worse talent around him 2 and 3 years ago, he shot better than Hayward, and he shot better this year too. Funny though, he gets slammed all the time. I am not advocating keeping Hendo, just that we need a real replacement like Lance.

I would like to dispel this myth that Hayward is a poor shooter.

In fact he's a very good shooter. However his three point shooting (something we desperately need) was so bad that it brought down his total field goal percentage.

Hayward shot 44% from inside the arc (better than LeBron James) and 50% in the paint. It was his abysmal 29% from three that brought down his total shooting percentage down.

If he gets that three point percentage back up he could easily be a top five shooting guard in the NBA. However that's a big if, and I'm not sure I'd be willing to risk a max contract that would put us in the hole next year (meaning that we wouldn't be signing any free agents).

If we throw a max at contract we better pray that we can move Henderson or next year we are going to be sitting back as all the other teams are signing free agents.

Has Hendo ever shot 40+% from 3 in his entire career?

Has Hendo ever in his wildest dreams been projected or thought of as a 18/5/5 guy?

Lets just throw out all the above. Look at their games / skills. Not even comparable.

There is a reason why Hayward is very sought after and Hendo, well........

Hayward shot over 40+% 2 out of his 4 years from 3. I am not worried about his stroke.

I didnt even know about how good he was inside the arc. Just makes me want him even more.

He could easily be a top 5 SG in the the league with his physical tools and skills.

I was listening to an interview with Chris Ford I think...he was breaking down the weird anomoly that is his 3pt shooting...saying since college he shoots well one season..then poorly the next season..and has continued the odd-even year of good 3pt shooting to a drop off.

He tinkers with his shot alot and why I think he would go to Phoenix with his ties to Jeff Hornachek. With Mark Price here I think he would snap him into a consistant 3pt shooter bc he IS a good shooter..just for whatever reason had a poor percentage season.

Also the "No One will come here to play with Heyward" is a weird comment...who is dying to play with Lance Stephenson?

Any free agent we would attract would be bc we have strung three years of playoff runs and won a first series..it is coaching/team wins dependant not player dependant.

AL Jefferson will still be the man the next two years so it would fall on him, Kemba improving and then the MKG, Haywards to make it happen. Hayward just would stabilize the offense bc you still cannot back off of him 29% or not.

MKG needs to start and develop. Don't throw that away just because we are impatient and want to reach our peak right now. Patience we don't have to max out our talents this season

Most ppl id imagine would assume Hayward would play SG and MKG would play SF.

Idk man I'm a noob at basketball lol . What I do know, and what applies to a lot of things, is that replacing someone and cutting a young players development will bite us in the ass in the long haul. We should not go for our instant gratification just because we can. We need to be patient and enjoy the long term benefit of a MKG. If Heyward comes in and plays a different position, then that's good news

    • Saw this show up in my new feed. Nice to see a couple of our rookies making it into the top 5 so far, even if it is a pff measure... From https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-top-15-rookies-week-9-2025 ... 4. TE Mitchell Evans, Carolina Panthers (78.7) Evans struggled in the Panthers’ tight win over the Packers, finishing with a 41.8 PFF overall grade — third worst among tight ends this week. He was not targeted in the game and played only one snap in pass protection. He did log 15 run-blocking snaps, and although he earned a 68.9 PFF run-blocking grade in zone looks (seven snaps), his 39.0 mark in gap schemes (second worst for the week) dragged him down to a 46.6 PFF run-blocking grade overall — sixth worst for the week. Despite seeing zero targets over his past two games, Evans still leads the Carolina tight end group with a 74.3 PFF receiving grade. He has caught all nine of his targets for 90 yards, six first downs and two touchdowns. Evans also leads the Panthers’ tight end group in PFF run-blocking grade (72.2). He has recorded a 20.5% positive play rate across 175 snaps.  5. WR Tetairoa McMillan, Carolina Panthers (78.6) McMillan had a better day against the Packers, recording four catches for 46 yards. Most of that production came in the first quarter via two 16-yard catches — one of which he snatched from Carrington Valentine’s hands, who was in perfect position to break up the pass. McMillan accounted for three first downs on the day, although Green Bay was able to limit his impact after the catch, holding him to 0.8 yards after the catch per reception. McMillan now has 41 catches for 558 yards — a top-15 mark. He is also tied for second with 19 explosive gains of 15-plus yards. Three of McMillan’s catches against the Packers came between the numbers, bringing him to 22 for 318 yards and 19 first downs (tied for second most) this season. He owns a 26.1% threat rate and a 76.6 PFF receiving grade between the numbers. He also ranks in the top 10 in explosive gains (10) and yards after the catch per reception (5.5) within that area of the field.
    • At least we don't need to hear overreacting about towels ...
    • Actually there is, try being a Charlotte Hornets fan. I mean the team fuging moved at its peak and hasn't recovered since and that was 25 years ago
