Give Me the Low Down on Charlotte, NC

Speak to similar cities. I've been around the world a few times and have visited cities everywhere.

So have I. Spent many years overseas actually. Neat.

The question is, in your exciting world travels, what does Charlotte lack in culture compared to other mid-sized cities? You seem to have trouble articulating an answer despite your passion but would rather talk about taxes and me being jealous and defensive. I promise I don't have any vested interest in your like or dislike of the city.

Okay, you win, I will never ever again say anything negative about your city unless I have your permission. Will you please stop picking on me now? I should have known better than to think anyone would be allowed to have a difference of opinion...

I'm sorry... *sob*

(and you may want to check the populations of San Francisco and Boston, you know, those cities I mentioned earlier in comparison to Charlotte? Yeah, Boston has a smaller population than Charlotte and SF is slightly more, still very comparable by census standards).

You may have a point on the music scene. But you can pop in the double door anytime for something good.

Also we have bad strip clubs

Looking ahead for the city...

Once the North Tryon area gets gentrified as per the city plans, there will be a really nice light rail connection from South End to Noda which I think will be one of the things that really cracks the center city open at a pedestrian scale.  The Chantily-Plaza Mid area and around Scott Ave. in South End are really nice pockets with cool stuff.

If the city had their own place like an 18th St. Mall, U St., 6th Street, Beale St., etc., that would really change a lot of opinions.  The re-done area around the old Midtown Square has a ton of potential connecting to Freedom Park and the greenway system.

You can't be serious if you think Boston and SF are the same size as Charlotte. You're comparing their center cites to the greater Charlotte area of you think they're anywhere close. That's just common sense of you've been to those cities...like you said you have.

Read the census.

Just as Charlotte's numbers don't include Matthews, Pineville, Concord, etc., SF and Boston don't include their respective suburbs.

But yeah, you gotta be right, so keep plugging away.

You're using the census to tell me Charlotte is the same size as SF and Boston?

Lol...good call.

Come on man...you're usually a smart poster. I know those numbers support your argument but trying to convince us that Charlotte is the same size as Boston and SF based on just total population is a joke. I know you know that, too.

Next convince us that Columbus and El Paso are both bigger cities than Boston and SF.

ok you've lost me on this page.

If you aren't going by population, then what are you using to determine how "large" a city is? Square mileage?

If so, Charlotte would destroy both San Francisco and Boston.

I believe you are confusing population with population density. Charlotte is much more spread out than those cities. Those other cities basically have the same population in 25% of the land area.

eta: Charlotte is just shy of 300 square miles while SF and Boston are both under 50 square miles. So, those cities have the same population in 1/6th of the land area.

Neither of those mean anything. Cities are not simply defined by the population within arbitrary borders. Area is useless as well.

Metro areas are a much better measure:
