Nice story on Jerricho Cotchery

By Joe Person believe it or not (will miracles never cease?).

Life-changing moment

In the spring of 1998, shortly before his 16th birthday, Cotchery and his mother got into an argument one evening after he said he was going out with his friends for the night. His mother told him his family was going to church the next day.

Cotchery left the house angry and in a bad mood. The last thing he told his mother was he wouldn’t be joining them at church.

The following day Cotchery was returning from an AAU basketball game in Tuscaloosa with several friends, including Brian Talley and Karlos Dansby, the Cleveland Browns linebacker who is also from Birmingham.

Talley was driving when a tire blew, causing the vehicle to flip several times.

Cotchery suffered cuts on his arms, hands and head. There were so many glass fragments embedded in his wrist, doctors couldn’t remove them all, Cotchery said.

But he and Dansby escaped serious injury.

Talley, who Cotchery said was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene.

“That kind of changed everything for me,” Cotchery said. “And helped me see beyond myself.”

Cotchery said he began attending church regularly and tried to be a better son and brother. He also started spending less time on the streets.

“That’s when things kind of slowed down for me,” he said. “You look back on it and it’s like, it’s by God’s grace. I’m not here in this place for myself.”

Didn't know he was friends with my man, Dansby either.

Amen to that!

I really like the direction that Gettleman is taking this team. How many teams have won Superbowls that have me-first players. Not many I would imagine. Antics from players only divide and Gettleman brought in players that he thought were high character players. Cotchery and Avant are all about the team and I think that element will shine through this year.

Great article! I wonder how much staff researcher Maria David contributed. Ghost writer?

I mean I'm not saying I find it hard to believe that Person wrote something this good... Actually that's exactly what I'm saying.

    • Certainly we had a very solid free agency. There are things to like about Morgan. There are also things to be weary of. Beyond that I mean this isn't really that different from past iterations of the Panthers. In that I mean pushing ourselves up against the limits of the salary cap to maximize a team that could ultimately end up just being mid. And at the end of the day the only area of success that will matter in making this franchise a legitimate Super Bowl contender for now and the next few years will be if Dan Morgan can navigate multiple successful drafts. And not just in the early rounds either. He needs to find high end talent in the mid to late rounds too. That is what separates the pretenders from the contenders in the NFL. Until that comes to fruition nothing is going to truly change for the better regarding the trajectory of this franchise.
    • A 3rd round pick that only has 5 pressures and 10 tackles through three seasons? Are we sure this isn't a misprint? That's gotta be a Hurney 2nd rounder.
    • Ok haven't bet college basketball all year, betting the tourney and on lower seeds was a bad plan. 35 units lost in two days, but still way up for the month and up for the year so let's get back to what I'm good at, here's my soccer play today.
