Comparison of Panthers WR Spending

Recommended Posts

Don't see how that's a different argument at all. Data set shows that top paid corners get into teens in compensation and top paid MLB heat the ceiling at close to double digit.

I think another thing you have to look at is how many elite cornerbacks there are compared to elite MLB's. There is a huge difference in maybe 5 top linebackers compared to 10-15 top cornerbacks.

Perhaps we have been "smart" managing our receivers for the last couple of years within the fiscal reality that is in part a legacy of Marty Hurney, but I will expect Dave Gettleman to invest more at the receiver position in the future.  If the current relatively low valuation of running backs continues, then I can see a "swapping" of budgetary position (so to speak), but I can't see us spending the least in the NFL on receivers and running backs simultaneously.

As for DE, it is what it is. You can't pay Hardy and Johnson top dollar without skewing the budget.  Even casual football fans should be able to realize that, but most certainly regular Huddlers.

Gettleman has done the best he knows to do given the cap problems he inherited.  I don't know that I would have done what he did which ultimately was to hold the line and gamble that he could replace the guys he couldn't afford to keep.  He must be so sure in his ability to judge talent and put together the right pieces that he was willing to part with Smith who it appears that Gettleman was not a fan.  He had to know that doing that would put him under the microscope and apparently he was fine with that.  As for flipping the budget from running backs to receivers, it really depends on who he thinks is good enough to spend big bucks on when their current or rookie contract ends.  We really haven't seen him spend big bicks on anyone outside of franchising Hardy.  Obviously Cam will likely be the first big one.

As for paying Hardy and Johnson, it depends on which of them wants to be reasonable going forward.  I could see a scenario where we lose one or even both if Johnson doesn't renegotiate and Hardy holds out for Johnson like money. Gettleman has shown he isn't going to change his philosophy for anyone so far.
