Hornets Are Interested In McDermott At #9?

BTW, this is a guy that went to Team USA camp last summer and lit it up.  Only two collegians were invited (Smart was the other), and McDermott according to sources was one of the best players there.

A few names I've heard as Day 1 standouts from Team USA camp: Damian Lillard, Gordon Hayward, DeAndre Jordan AND collegian Doug McDermott

“He's a confident player. He's a confident shooter, a confident scorer,” New Orleans Pelicans forward Ryan Anderson said. “I think a college guy can come in here and be intimidated, but he wasn't. He accepted the challenge.”

“He can shoot the sh*t out of the basketball,” Detroit Pistons big man Andre Drummond said. “It's incredible. I was surprised he didn't come out for the draft this year, but he's going to make a lot of money the way he shoots.”

“He's going to be a great shooter in this league," Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson added.

“He did fine through the physicality,” Detroit Pistons power forward Greg Monroe said. “He got to the rim a little bit. He definitely looked good.”

So he has played against some of the best NBA players and apparently more than held his own

I want nothing with McDermott!!!

I hated the Cody Zeller pick, but was able to live with it knowing he was pretty damn good his first year at Indiana.

McDermott is just a great college player. Too damn small to play PF and too damn slow to play SF. He's nothing but a bench player that will come and shoot some nice 3s. His game is Korver.

If we take McDermott, I will kick a baby.

Jeebus. Everyone is listed at shoe height.

Otherwise Vonleh and Gordon are only 6'7.

If you are going to use height without shoes than at least use it for every other player

Exactly. Who gives a fug how tall he is without shoes? He's going to be wearing shoes during games, right??

He measured in at 6'7.75 at the combine so he'll always be called 6'8. His wingspan was measured at 6'9.25 which is a lot better then some of you have been stating.

I could probably talk myself into McDermott.  Here's two "weakness" scouting reports for two different guys, taken word-for-word from NBADraft.net...

(Player)'s athletic and physical limitations place questions about how he will translate to the NBA … Is not a very explosive or quick player, with average leaping skills … hard to imagine him getting daylight on his some of his shot attempts

(Player) is undersized and he also lacks great athleticism to offset this size deficiency... questions remain how his game translates against bigger, quicker and more athletic opponents at the next level... he struggled getting his shot off against taller defenders

Pretty similar, no?  That's the thing with scouting reports, you're just guessing how a guy MIGHT project into the NBA.  You don't have to have crazy athleticism to be a good basketball player.  You need to actually be a good basketball player, with good technique, good teamwork, good basketball IQ, and be able to find a productive role on the team you're on.  I think McDermott could probably do that here.  We don't need him to be a superstar.  We have one of those in Big Al.  Frankly, I don't think anyone at 9 will likely become a superstar.  But he fills a role that we desperately need - consistent outside shooting from the 3 position.  He has a quick shot, so I don't doubt he can make his mark in the league.  And with Big Al requiring double teams, and Kemba slashing to the basket, McDermott would get his.  Of course I could be wrong, but just dismissing the guy because he's not that athletic seems kinda foolish.

Oh, and player 1 above is McDermott.  Player 2 is Kevin Love.

Eveyone who breaks down McD on the radio is like.."he is perfect for the Hornets bc he can shoot" " he will never be a 20 point per gm score at this level and will struggle to play Defense....he will be more a 4 type guy(at 6'5?!?)

So tell me why again he will be perfect at 9?! Bc of ur mock draft?

Or they will say "player B will be a reach at 9 I have him more 12-14"...well the Hornets have no pick there so if you like a guy just get him..sorry Jay Bilas.

McD is like that girl some of your friends think is hot but you are totally not into. You think she is very avg or below avg...but might go out with once just to shut people up... McD is that girl in this draft.

Hornets would be wise to build him up however so there is a percieved value there at 9 to possibly trade the pick.

If they publically said McD sucks!! Then the 9th picks gets downgraded a bit....so... Hopefully... Smokescreen..

Although Bonnell is usually money when he posts something.

Best case-realistic-career comparison: Ga Tech's Matt Harpring, Wally Sczerbiack.

Wally Szczerbiak had a 10-year NBA career, was All-Rookie First Team, and was an All-Star.  If you told me we'd get 8 straight years of double digit scoring, 50% shooting from the field, and an All-Star appearance from McDermott after drafting him, I'd jump all over that.  And so would anyone with a brain.

IF I TYPE IN ALL CAPS WILL YOU GUYS STOP USING HIS HEIGHT WITHOUT HIS SHOES ON?

Seriously. He will be wearing shoes during the games.

Also, how did you get his height at 6'5? Even without shoes he's taller than that.

    • That was a good segment. Watched every minute of it and would highly recommend it to all fans.
    • "So much of what the Panthers are going to do next week isn't dictated by their preference, but by what happens above them. That's another benefit of not getting locked into need. For instance, if you're thinking you want a receiver, seeing five or six of them go off the board and reacting by taking the sixth or seventh off your list instead of the first (or second or third) something else isn't necessarily wise." https://www.panthers.com/news/ask-the-old-guy-back-into-the-weeds-of-the-nfl-draft-bryce-young-charlotte-hornets-mock-draft This is what some don't seem to get, I don't care how many times it is said: You're NOT going to draft an inferior person at one position, just because that position is perceived as, or is in fact, a bigger need. That would basically nullify, or at least lessen, the reason why you set yourself up via free agency to be able to take the BPA/BAP on the board in the first place.  Yes, the process is complex, very much involved and ongoing, but the overall philosophy is not rocket science. You set yourself up in order not to be pigeonholed into taking a lower graded player at the expense of a higher graded one. This is why Morgan, Gantt and countless of others say the same thing. This is why it's just nonsensical to set yourself in a position where you don't have to, but then act like you have to come hell or high water: "Oh, we have to draft [whatever position], and we can't draft [this position]."  I'm good with whatever they do, until proven otherwise, but even then, you have to be mature enough to know that drafting is an imperfect exercise, filled with hits and misses. And, you generally don't know if you've hit, and especially missed, right away. Moreover, like I've said before, sometimes two players--different positions or not--can both be hits on their respective teams, so in that sense, it's not purely about a right or wrong pick as much as it's about putting puzzle pieces together at the time the best way that you know how.  At the end of the day, people are going to believe what they want to believe, but one thing that's true is that what the Panthers do regarding the draft is dependent upon what others do, and what others do can and does change things. That being the case, it's just another reason why you can't go in with tunnel vision. The thought of doing that is preposterous.
