David Newton: Cam is earning respect

top dawg

People thinking Wilson is fake or forcing his nice guy image? Just, no.

Dude is one of the nicest guys from all reports, and was nothing but nice on campus the couple times I saw him interacting with people/me.

It's quite likely that the same people who kept bringing up the fake smile comment from the Cam Newton critics are the ones calling Wilson fake.

Russell Wilson is a winner, and champion.

He should be rated as one of the best by his peers, simple based on the fact that it's every players goal to win a Lombardi.

They are giving reapect where it's been earned.

Cam is still the man for the Panthers, but get over the resentment and jealousy, people.

Back door compliment, I see. Don't remember  Cam having any off field problem which needed maturing and leadership. Enough of this nonsense.

I know what you mean.

Cam had the natural progression of any young QB (his may have been even faster). But since the media, so many times tried to paint him [wrongly] in a negative light and over analyze everything little he did and didn't do, we many times inadvertently justify it by bringing up his "maturity and leadership", as it's any different for Cam as any other player.

Now on the contrary, we can also be a bit sensitive about that ourselves, as Cam has matured in certain aspects (as he should).

But I'm sure one you're problems is, when it's said as if it's some big surprise, and/or if was never going to happen (or he came so far). That's where the hyperbole comes in.

Ironically, some folks are genuine (probably Top Dog) when doing/saying this, and other do use it as a back handed compliment (such as many in the media).

just like I have always supported Gettleman, but tell it like I see it when I think he is wrong, I have supported Cam all the more.

Cam will tell you himself that when he was visually sulking on the sidelines and interviews that it wasn't exactly befitting of a leader. Indeed, his father had a talk with him and literally showed Cam his demeanor, and Cam admitted that he didn't like what he saw. Cam made a focused effort to improve and ultimately changed. Simultaneously, he decided that he wanted to be a captain, and some of his teammates even remarked how he had grown on and off the field, and ultimately rewarded him with the "C". Perhaps Cam's past demeanor and level of maturity off the field wasn't much different than some others, but this still doesn't change the fact that Cam has still matured as a man and leader (and continues to grow), and is deserving of praise (regardless of how people perceive the praise).

Eh. I got you. But all this is no different than what so many other QB's and NFL players go through.

The problem is you never hear about them/their trials and tribulations, and it's not used to tell you how much they needed to grow up.

I actually think Cam's been quite mature--all things considered-- since he came in the league. And any immaturity he showed was few and far in between. There was nothing unnatural about his development. Him admitting things, is actually evidence of his maturity, or Cam just trying to appease people telling them what they want to hear. His father talking to him should be natural, and tells you more about their honest relationship (some fathers would say nothing publicly to the media).

Have you heard the stories of Eli Manning, and what he went through to win the respect of the Giants Lockeroom (or even Johnny Boy right now)? Not even close anything Cam experienced with the Panthers.

My Two Cents.

    • The defense is 28 out of 32 in salary cap allocation for 2025. We have a ton of resources tied up in the offense including the highest paid OL in the league multiple 1st round WR's and multiple recent draft picks across the offense at TE and RB and we have two 1000 yard backs. Bryce and company couldn't get past Tyler Shough and his crew in 2 games. That's all there is to it. You can spin it and put the entire onus on the defense to your heart's desire it doesn't change the fact that this is an OFFENSIVE team now. If you want to argue that we should revert back to a defensive identity as we have been in the past which has brought us success then I will agree with you on that. But as it stands the onus is on the offense because that is where we have invested through the nose. Dave Canales and Bryce Young need to do a hell of a lot better than they have against the rebuilding Saints who without us should only have 2 wins this season.
    • Bryce is not trending up. He is the same QB he has always been. Bottom of the league in most categories.  If Canales thinks he can build a contender with Bryce then he is a bigger idiot then I thought.  Offense next year will have the same issues and be just as inconsistent as it was this year.  We have seen Bryce’a ceiling and it is 175 yards a game and that is not a QB you keep around as your starter. That is barely a backup.
    • Looks like Darnold should have had at least 3 picks. That'll get ugly in the playoffs eventually. Can't deny his physical talent though. You either have that or you don't. Mike Macdonald is a legit coach.
