The long extra point

Re: why change it?

Why have it?

If it's converted 99%+ of the time, then what's the point in having it aside from wasting time?  They moved it to make the play an actual PLAY.  Hopefully there would be some suspense in it.  I'm of the mind that if the play is a gimme anyway, then go ahead and just make a TD a full 7 points.

I would support the change. The PAT as it stands is useless.

Over the course of a season what is the miss rate at the current distance.  99%   Even when a kicker shanks it.  It is so close he doesn't miss.

Case in point.  Gay's miss last night changed the whole complexion of the game.  Instead of being tied after Reaves TD and the extra point puts us ahead. the miss meant we could only tie so Rivera tried to put us ahead.

Game over after the Williams TD, if we win the onside kick which we did.  Or if we decide to make Buffalo go the distance.

I say eliminate the kick version of the PAT all together and just make it a 2 point conversion.

If this is going to be changed and they want to keep the kick portion while making it exciting, then there is an easy solution that will entertain the fans and make the extra points earned.

Start at the normal spot for a PAT. A team has 15 seconds from the spot of the ball to run a play during the PAT. A team must attempt to get it in the end zone for 2 points. If this is failed, the ball is spotted at the original spot and the kicker has 15 seconds once the ball is spotted to get his kick through the uprights for 1 point. Puts more pressure on the kickers to sprint on to the field and get the kick off quick.

DO NOT GIVE A TEAM A CHOICE TO SPOT THE BALL or to choose 2 point or 1 point. This is what will make it boring real quick. You must limit the time they have to make the PAT. Basically forcing them to go no huddle after a TD.

A bit more elaborate, but these 2 options would be more exciting for the game and fans:

1. After a score a team has to start at the 15 yard line. They must run one play before attempting a kick. If they do not get past the 5 yard line, they have to kick it. If they get past the 5 yard line they can run an extra play to get in the end zone or they can kick it. If their 1st play does not result in getting past the 5 yard line they must attempt a kick. If after their second play when they do pass the 5 yard line and they do not get in the end zone, they must attempt a kick, A team has 15 seconds as soon as the ball is spotted to get the a play off, or they lose the play. No huddling is allowed. Plays must be called at the line. Getting in the end zone from the 15 results in 3 points. Getting in the end zone from inside the 5 yard line results in 2 points. A successful kick results in 1 point. An interception or fumble recovery results in 1 point for the defense. A blocked kick results in 2 points for the defense. A turnover or blocked kick being returned past the 50 yard line results in 3 points for the defense.

2. After a successful touchdown, the ball will be spotted at the 50 with 1 minute placed on the clock. The offense is given an opportunity to score again in a 1 minute drill. No timeouts allowed during this 1 minute period. A TD still counts for 6 and a FG counts for 3. If the defense gets a turnover and returns it for a TD they earn 6 points and a following 1 minute period for their offense. This 1 minute period does not take away from the game clock.

This turns the PAT into a fast moving mini game and gives a good defense the ability to factor in some points with their play.

I hated it!

Dumb move. The NFL wants to make football soft, but gonna move the extra point further just so it'll be more exciting? What will be the outcome of this? Def more injuries: blocking FG!!!!!!

If you want to be more exciting then just take it out and have teams go for 2pt conversion. Then what's next? No Kicker at all.
