Pre-season Game 1: Winners and Losers

Recommended Posts

Winners:

Kelvin Benjamin- Didn't play very much but made a heck of a catch for a touchdown when he got a ball his way. Looked fast getting around Gilmore and displayed great concentration to corral the ball for 6.

Tavarres King- Displayed reliable hands and moved the chains early and often in the second half.

Brandon Williams- Solid blocking, reliable hands, and a big touchdown to boot. Love this kid's potential.

Joe Webb- Had some accuracy problems but delivered some good balls and was impressive outside the pocket with his feet.

Kawann Short- Created havoc when rushing the passer. Used his quickness and violent hands to get to the quarterback and even if he did not register the sack, he was the reason for tackles for loss and sacks alike.

Josh Norman (sorta)- Showed some intensity, tackled well, and got his annual INT in pre-season. Will it translate to the regular season and can he continue to perform at a high level for the rest of pre-season? Still struggles to defend the slant is is more bark than bite.

Losers

Second String Offensive Line- Atrocious run-blocking and some penalties/lack of discipline. We severely lack adequate depth on the offensive line.

Kenjon Barner- I'll admit...the kid had no chance on many of his runs due to poor blocking but I would have liked to see him make more of his opportunities. He made a good play or two but overall a pretty forgettable performance. Reeves seems to run harder.

Charles Godfrey- Nothing new here. Struggled in coverage and was exposed in the passing game early in the first quarter.

Jordan Gay- You need to hit extra points even if they are pushed back a little this pre-season. Brownie points for the nice onside-kick at the end.

EDIT: Not sure how I forgot about Blanchard. He had a very rough night and probably won't have a job for much longer. Chase Blackburn played well in limited snaps...had a big stop on a goal-line and sniffed out a screen for a loss. Cam was also a winner tonight I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone on the bench have so much fun.

Thoughts?

The biggest two losers IMO were the second-string offensive line and Matt Blanchard. The line really struggled to do anything positive, and Blanchard just plain looked bad. I could have given Blanchard somewhat of a pass if not for his awfully overthrown interception. He seemed to have plenty of time to make the throw and just totally sailed it.

Blanchard probably moved down in the depth chart tonight. Not only did he look really average, but Webb looked tons better.

I would like to see what Bersin looks like with Cam, DA, or Webb taking snaps.

Couldn't agree more on Blanchard and Webb.

    • I wouldn’t be surprised if the Pats win it all or at least get there. Maye is awesome.
    • Young quarterbacks Drake Maye, Bo Nix, and Bryce Young have led their teams to undefeated records since October.   Drake Maye has guided the New England Patriots to a 5-0 record in that period, with 2,285 passing yards and 17 touchdowns in nine games. Bo Nix has directed the Denver Broncos to a 5-0 stretch, throwing for 1,976 yards and 17 touchdowns, contributing to a 7-2 overall start. Bryce Young, in his second season, has led the Carolina Panthers to a 4-0 run since October, accumulating 1,390 yards and 11 touchdowns amid a 4-4 record.   Undefeated QBs since start of October (min. 4 starts)   Drake Maye 5-0 Bo Nix 5-0 Bryce Young 4-0   Bryce Young when asked about his mindset during game winning drives: "You don’t rise to the occasion you fall back to the level of your training."
    • 1. Cowboys-No explanation needed. 2. Rest of NFC South equally. If I had to pick I would say Falcons.    3. Eagles- Both of the games I have attended there the fans were so horrible. The fan base is so ridiculously misbehaved, I’ve never seen such immaturity. 4- Lions- I have cousins in Michigan that grew up Lions fans and they are some of the most obnoxious people I have ever met, as are all of their Lions buddies. The NFL has been lucky that Detroit has been in the cellar for its eternity.    5. Tie between Bears and Vikings. Both act like Steelers, Cowboys, Niners fans do with nostalgia and legendary seasons but neither have ever really had them. They act like they each won 5 super bowls in previous decades but never accomplished poo outside of Chicago in 85.
