The Cam Newton Conspiracy Theory

What's amazing is everyone is so against it, yet, like OP said, in the NBA it's commonplace. I dunno. I still don't have the utmost faith in Gettleman, not like some of the posters on here. We'll see how things go, though, but at this point, if we have one injury, we're screwed.

The good thing about those other positions, their "mega deals" aren't the same as the huge deals QBs get. Kuechly could get a 5/70m contract, and it be the largest ever given to a MLB.

Right, but if Cam gets north of 100 mill, Keek gets 70, say Star gets in the 35-50 mill range as does KB, how in the blue hell are we going to afford all that? Not to mention if we get a top 5-top 10 pick a couple drafts between now and then, we also have to pay a nice little chunk for a rookie contract.

I think this will become a big problem is signing all these studs we hit home runs on in the 1st round

Also, you have to take into account the TV contract/cap spike that should happen next year.

I dont think there is any type of conspiracy. HOWEVER, I believe that if the season doesnt go well for Cam and/or the Panthers, one of two things might happen. 1) Cam may get fed-up with the lack of support around him and not sign the big contract, or 2) Cam doesnt improve his accuracy and ability to find the open WR, and the Panthers wait another year before offering the big contract.

There have been plenty of these threads in the Tinderbox lately, why not introduce one to the Panther forum?

The Panthers need to negotiate a new contract for Cam Newton soon. How different are those negotiations if the team is 6-10 versus 10-6? And how is it not beyond the realm of possibility the Panthers purposefully set the team up for another substandard season in an effort to save some money?

Scoff, laugh and guffaw as you may, but the precedent has been set (Jerry Richardson leading the owner lockout while claiming he didn't have 2 nickels to rub together and the subsequent horrendous roster and season result).

Granted, one may have to bring out the inner-most cynical self to consider the possibility, but I personally don't think it's that far-fetched to believe. And I can't wait to see how many blind faith fans will tell me this is a complete and utter impossibility although there is another professional sports league where this kind of thing is rather commonplace and accepted (NBA).

Don't think so.  Even if Cam is given a glorious contract we will able to pay both him and keuchly probably after this season.  Cap is expected to take a big jump, our dead money will be pretty clean and we'll be very close or done with the bad contracts.

Honestly I have no problem with the plan for 2010 season.  New CBA was about to be signed and nobody really knew how it would turn out and we had some good young core players.  There was no realistic shot at a playoff run that year.  We had to keep the good pieces and start from scratch elsewhere.  The problem was the contracts to lock up these players and how good/injury riddled they were.

Williams and Stew were paid for past-production when they had a really solid line, Williams was a bit older and stew couldn't get on the field in following years.  Godfrey was a huge whiff.  The Beason situation was unfortunate, I don't think anyone could have seen that coming.  CJ was paid alot but we kept him away from a division competitor and he's produced on a consistent basis.  Let's not kid ourselves just because our whole Dline is great, CJ makes it click.  Everyone seems to play better when CJ is on the field.

Thing is Cam signs a contract that is in similar fashion of Kaep and Dalton it will be only appear to be a massive contract, the real value of it is far less and it gives teams a lot of wiggle room for making decisions about the player.

I think the best course of action for us to take with these guys are front loaded guaranteed contracts.  KB isn't fair to throw in with those guys yet(although he will be, I think he's going to beast).

Cam, Luke and Star SHOULD be priorities for us.  If we take care of them early we can ride them out for their careers.  Get it over with while the rest of the league is adjusting to the new cap level and we are rid of dead money and garbage contracts. Some people on here vastly underestimate the amount of money we have going to waste.
