The Steve Smith Post

I'll just say this: after watching both games in full today, I completely understand Gettleman's decision to cut Steve Smith. Steve has lost a step, as evidenced by his 3-4 drops. But he can still play, and he a good player both as a short-yardage and deep-ball threat. At the same time, I completely understand what Gettleman is going for now, and that our receivers are as good as or better than last year.

So, let's let bygones be bygones. Steve Smith isn't washed-up, and Dave Gettleman isn't a moron. We'll have a whole season to gauge how Steve operates, and whether today's game was an aberration, or if last season was an aberration and he is still a guy who can get you 1,000 yards and 5 TDs. We'll have a whole season to judge the first true year of the Gettleman era (and the second year of the Shula era), and how he's built the team. But I think everything will be just fine for both sides.

If we hadn't cut smith then KB wouldn't be as ready to step in and be the #1 wr now. We're better off without him, as sad as that is to say.

You remember when Jake Delhomme flamed out in 09? Imagine cutting Smith back then and Jake spreading the ball around instead of forcing it to Smith every pass. That's our offense now without Smith.

Smith would have gone into camp hanging on to that #1 receiver tag, and with Cam hitting it off right away with KB, things wouldn't have gone well, either on the field or in the locker room. In this case cleaning house/starting fresh doesn't have to mean the on field performance suffers.

Forcing passes to Steve Smith was not Jake's problem that year.  Overthrowing so many passes was Jake's problem, who he was throwing to was irrelevant.  He overthrew all receivers equally.

#1 beneficiary of smitty's cut is greg olsen. we fed the hell out of him yesterday like we never have.

and smitty hasn't shown the kind of play he did yesterday in over 3 years. if he had, he'd still be here.

the move was best for the panthers and smitty

Hoping Olsen has an all pro season.

you guys do now he wanted to play slot, also he's the #2 in Bal..........so yeah, he never was asked for a pay cut or restructure as well

sole benefit he gets from being cut is he may have more yards in Bal then here, we run a slow pace offense

i also said i wanted to stop being a dick on the internet, and i've never been asked to not be a dick on the internet

there is no benefit to not being a dick on the internet

I didn't realize the 49'er game was 3 years ago.

i wasn't talking about the drops

He dropped 1 at most, caught the only TD. So what are you talking about? He was the only one to make a play. you said he hasn't played like that in 3 years which is obviously wrong. Olsen was already Cam's prime target last year so smith leaving did not really benefit him. Keeping Smith and the addition of KB would have benefitted all involved . Obviously this was not an on field performance issue or move.

    • The team wore down and shots stopped falling.  Ball, Miller and Kon have to play well.  At least 2 of the 3.  2/16…0/6. That ain’t gonna cut it.     If Bridges and White are the only ones hitting from 3, it’s not gonna go well.  The 3’s make Moose and Kalk work.  No 3’s it gets too crowded for them with all the bodies crashing the boards.    (Kalk needs to add strength, something awful tho.)
    • Was at the game and NYCFC honestly outplayed CLT the whole way.  Khalina and Zaha carried the team.  Zaha's wife on IG making it sound like he's gone come July. They're going to have to pay him or find a big time replacement because the team looks like pretty lost without him.
    • No one's saying LaMelo has no blame we're responding to you acting like he's the reason they lost. The scapegoating and blaming the teams woes on his personality is where it's like Cam Newton all over again. It was a failure on multiple fronts and primarily Lee's. Dude said ON AIR pregame that they had to protect the paint and if that was his gameplan going in he couldn't have botched it more. As the commentators said Ball's a rhythm guy and Orlando was preventing him for getting any kind of flow going. I'm a normie watching on TV and said they needed to bait them into fouling to combat that. They didn't even try until the 2nd half when it was too late. I think it's fair to expect the star to overcome whatever but LaMelo was not the problem in that game and he's not what is holding the team back. He's the only reason they're flirting with being a great team. I kinda put the center play on Lee too. Moose is great until he's up against a big who can body him. We've always known that and that's what Kalkbrenner is for. I don't know if it would have changed much but Kalkbrenner should have had more minutes than him.  And moving forward with the center position, I just think it's the time to trade Diabate while his stock's high and that's not an indictment of his game. He's like an evolved combination of Biyombo and PJ. He's a great rim protector and the strength issue is just what you're going to have to deal with if you want that. But Kalkbrenner is perfectly capable of protecting the rim and we gotta get away from the undersized centers or it'll always be a problem for us.
