Lions O-Line and Secondary Banged Up

The Detroit Lions lost their starting right tackle, LaAdrian Waddle, after just one series.

And now they've lost Waddle's replacement, Corey Hilliard, for the season, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Hilliard's injury reportedly is a foot. He likely is surprised by the seriousness of the injury, given that he was able to finish the game while playing on it.

"I think I did OK. Just happy we got the win, and happy I didn't mess anything up," he said afterward, laughing.

Hilliard cracked several jokes in the locker room, and had the disposition of a man who had no idea his season had already ended. He was not wearing a boot or any kind of protective device in the locker room.

"I'm all right," he said. "I just twisted (the ankle). I'll be all right."

The Lions won their opener against the New York Giants in convincing fashion, but those good feelings have been mitigated by the loss of two players for the season in as many days. Bill Bentley was placed on injured reserve Tuesday with a torn ACL.

Detroit re-signed guard/tackle Garrett Reynolds on Wednesday morning, and he could start at right tackle Sunday against the Carolina Panthers if Waddle's calf injury continues to linger.

The Lions are expected to sign a cornerback once they officially put Hilliard on injured reserve.

Never want to see an opponent injured, but I'm sure the defensive line is licking its chops at the thought of a 3rd string tackle on the line, and facing a banged up secondary that already wasn't very good when healthy is a boon for Cam making his first regular season start with our new receiving corps.

Ugh, just read this myself. Our secondary has always been a soft spot. What kept us in games last year was a good offense, and good defensive front 7. A weak link in the o-line could really screw things up. I'll try to be positive and hope that at 6'7" and 310 lbs, Reynolds can at least get in the way of defenders enough to be more than a speed bump on their way to Stafford.

On a positive note, as was discussed by Roman Harper, he knows a thing or two about their offense. Say what you will about him but he and Decoud are very intelligent players and come from our primary division rivals and seem to love the strategic aspects of the game.

    • Any idea what happened to him at LSU? im reading that he was considered a 1st round pick in 2023, had an off 2024 season with only 4 sacks but was also on a horrible FSU team then went to LSU where he was supposed to be on an aggressive defense that should have given him a lot of sacks but he only ended up with one….   was he injured? Did the top SEC competition expose him? What happened? Cause this guy was considered a top prospect .
    • Sometimes its fun to read the threads/posts.  The panthers could literally hire a groundskeeper and we'd have a thread "improving the field for no other reason to prop up Bryce Young".  Apparently no move is ever done to actually make the team better.  All a conspiracy to just focus on Bryce Young. Or suddenly daydreaming and reminiscing about Sam Darnold when he was hated more than Bryce Young.  Its really fun to do a message board search about Darnold during that time period.   Or thinking there is just a tree that grows QB, and you can just easily go up and pluck one.
    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
