Why we would be fine

In what was an uncharacteristic night for the defense, take a look at Mayock's slant on the two big runs that killed us. Here you can see on the first Bell run, Kuechly and Harper shoot the same gap. This could be a communication issue as you know the secondary is new. Even on that run, TD has a chance to make a play. Also on the Blount run, DeCoud was in a position to make a play and did not.

This defense will not play this badly for a long time.

IIRC, Roman said on Panthers Talk a couple of weeks ago that basically he makes a decision as he's coming down into the box as the play is underway - reading the blocks to judge where the run will go.  Some of that is common sense, but in the way he described it, it sounded like he had quite a bit of freedom on making decisions during the play rather than following a set assignment before the play.

I remember Philly made a thread about listening to that show in particular, so maybe he can clarify a bit more...  But, it sounds like he guessed wrong or misread what he saw before making his decision.

Safety was probably the position I was most disappointed in Sunday night.  They have a lot of making up to do...  I still don't know why we haven't brought Chris Clemons in for a workout just to see if we like what he has to offer.

^ i missed that part of the interview, so i'm not sure what he said. definitely a clear miscommunication, and a very rare mistake made by a top notch defense.

and i really think that was the story of the night. situational football gone wrong in the worst possible ways at the worst possible time. every team has them; despite the many gaping holes on this team, we really haven't had a worst-possible-game since, arguably, the cardinals game last september.

On the big run up the gut that they replayed and showed Kuechly filling the lane on the right, TD was held so bad. I couldn't believe they didn't throw a flag. He would have been there to make the play. It turned a 3-4 yard gain into a monster play for them.

What pissed me off most about that play is the fact that you could barely make out what Collinsworth was saying with his mouth full of Tomlin.

You watched Cason get held, mugged and thrown to the ground and when the flag is thrown, say "he got a little help from the official".

Same thing happened to TD on that play. He was about to fill that gap but was held plain as day. Not one single flag. And all Collinsworth could talk about was "great execution" by the Steelers.

    • Yuck.  I still kind of like Herbert but these playoff performances are rough....
    • I feel like this was the case with River and McDermott defenses as well, we just had the jimmies and the joes to overcome these deficiencies with all pro players at edge and linebacker positions.  Even then, was extremely frustrated in 2015 when we'd let team come back from 20+ pt deficits playing prevent only to barely win at the end.
    • We need to move on soon and just use Bryce as a bridge to find our next guy. I'd like to see how this offense works with Canales hand picking his own guy. Bryce holds this offense back a lot considering you draft the first pick to carry your team and be your best player. We invested heavily for Bryce and need everything to go right just to have him look like a solid game manager sometimes. When he plays well he can look decent or mid, but when he plays bad he looks like a bottom 5 qb in league (backups included). It's not worth it, especially if we need to pay him soon, which means we have to skimp all over the roster. If the defenses don't hand it to us on a silver platter Atlanta style then we struggle big time. Defenses don't respect the offense at all. With Cam we could have the worst offensive talent and I'd still think we had a shot in any game we played. If Bryce is facing a 3rd and 10 I pretty much wave the white flag and don't think we can make that first down.
