Where do you attack Cincinnati ?

Over the last several years solid defensive play has become the norm for Cincinnati. They have finished in the top ten in total defense in each of the last 3 seasons.

The season is still young, but the Bengals have been unusually soft this year.

They are still solid in Pts. allowed per game at 19.0, but:

they are 27th in total defense, 19th in passing defense and 27th in rushing defense.

Basically, bend but don't break.

They are allowing a whopping 5 yards a carry ---basically everyone has run on them.

While they are 19th in passing yards allowed, a closer look reveals they are tops in the NFL in defensive passer rating, holding opposing QB's to a extremely low 67.6 rate and 56.6 % completions. They also lead the league in fewest touchdown passes allowed at 4.

Carolina is currently the NFL's 10th most pass happy team in terms of play calling percentage. The Panthers are passing on over 61% of their offensive plays.

It will be wildly unpopular, but despite the uncertainty at running back and the lack of overall success this year, look for the Panthers to make a big effort to run the football on Sunday.

Against this opponent, on the road, its the smart move---both to attempt to set up managable down and distance and to slow the opposing pass rush.

time of posession, mistake free football is what we should aim for. Keep Cam in the good rythm hes in and keep the defense off the feild.

Sounds to me like bend but not break means we can drive down the field and eat clock instead of get big chunks. We do that anyway lol.

Get the ball to the TE early and often. We need to establish a running game in order for us to have a chance. If we can run on them like the Patriots did we can open up the offense and let Benji and the receivers go to work. On defense we have to stop the run early and put pressure in Dalton face.

Maybe we get Stewie back this week. The end around is effective, even if you don't give it to the end. Keeps the LBs guessing.

Those short passes work. I know the bomb is sexy, but so are wins.

I am not sure any healthy Panther has the speed to make it outside, but the right side of the Bengal front 7 looks vulnerable.

Geno Atkins appears to be a shell of his former self, the combination of Gilberry and Geathers is not going to scare anyone in the run game and Emmanuel Lamur looks plain bad. He was victimized repeatadly against the Pats Sunday night.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Philly Brown utilized on some sort of weak side jet sweep or end around, especially early.

It sure would be nice to get a healthy Williams or Stewart back on Sunday. In any case, I believe Darrin Reaves has enough talent to give the Panthers a chance to run the ball.

Yeah, they got gashed up the middle for a lot. Peko and Still seemed almost disinterested. Didn't even notice Atkins to be honest. If Burfict is out again that will be key for them, they miss him.

We've got to cover Bernard out of the backfield on screens and short passes because that's where Forte really did some damage. Eifert is IR'd and Gresham looked horrible. Somehow Dalton has only been sacked once tho.
