Seattle defense played a whole lot of a 3-4 Sunday

It seems the word is out on the Panthers offense. Easily shut down with a 3-4 look.

Going back over the game, they are in a 3-4 maybe even the majority of the time. On the last two drives, they stayed in it for the entire time. Bruce Irvin was making Byron Bell look pretty terrible. Byron barely gets a hand on him before Irvin sacks Cam in the final possession.

It is a copy cat league folks. We will continue to see plenty of 3-4 even from base 4-3 defenses like Seattle for the rest of the season. Why? Because it works. The Panthers still have zero answers for it.

Why are  we not using the 2 TE set with olsen, williams, & dickson.  We need to throw more short and intermediate routes to have manageable 3r & 4th downs. We are also missing Tolbert's short-yardage and leadership.

Same reason Charles Godfrey was on this team for way longer than he should have been.

This falls on the coaches. Shula cannot game plan around it and Rivera is ultimately the one that has to fix this or hit the bricks. I'm leaning toward the latter. I've reserved judgment about a lot of things wrong with this team until now. My faith in Rivera has completely vanished and there's little he can do to reinstate it. Whatever is going on with this team it's obvious that he isn't aware or is clueless as how to fix it.

you would think ron, who coached a number 1 defense in san diego (that was also 3-4) would help out in protection schemes when it comes to countering this. yet our offense still looks like poo

Ron's focus is on LBs like "the cinci camera creep" was on the cheerleaders. RR is proving himself to be a better hall monitor or military dad rather than someone who evaluates the entire team and more so the staff to see what's working and what's not. smh... he has certainly allowed enough to get fired since coming here but last year may have given him a unmentioned 2 year extension. we're so 8-bit

Yeah, you would think, but cut him some slack...  He's still trying to figure out why Olsen wasn't involved more.

perfect! RR seems to have little concern.... either he and Getts knowingly expected this or he's a moron. If Getts ditched an winning team of vets than how is RR so comfy? something is going on there. RR acts like there is no worries and we can fix things by watching tape that we're clearly not learning from.

the seahawks don't play a 3-4, they play a wide 5 and they've done it since Carroll got there and blew a pick on Bruce Irvin to play the elephant.

Once the coach's film is available I'll break it down.

3 down lineman, 4 linebackers two of which are rushing the passer.

Not sure how thats not a 3-4

    • Canales up first. Guys got their legs back yesterday and started a little slow when they came out Bryce challenged them in the huddle and they responded "Dominant practice for the defense today." Praised turnovers, "beautiful hits," and being physical Praised Moehrig, Ransom, Incoom, and Jones II Confirmed playing starters. Predominantly a young team and can't pass up an opportunity. Emphasized game day routines such as nutrition, body readiness, etc. Plus it's a bunch of new guys on the defense. Bryce will start. Will play them the first two, but starters might sit for the third game depending on how practice goes that week. Nic Scourton has a mild hamstring that happened in special teams. DJ Johnson had an issue with his hip flare up and is getting checked out this afternoon. Experimenting with approach to preseason games. In Seattle they played their starters in all but the last preseason game and what Pete Carroll was looking for in terms of mental readiness to play football. Thomas Incoom has been getting a lot of work with AC Carter adding to his toolbelt. Getting better as a rusher and being physical in the run game. Looking for a consistency in response. 1pt for a win, 3pts for a TD. Defense doesn't like that, but in games if they give up one go ball the score can swing. They challenged the pass game and the run game today. Guys are getting together before, between, and after team drills to challenge each other Job of the coaching staff to set the foundation for our schemes, philosophy, and expectations of what it's like to play Panthers football. Powerful when players take that and the locker room owns it. That's when it becomes our team, their team. At the end of the day, the men on the field have to rebound from a bad play, celebrate the good plays, and keep each other in tune for a whole game. Robert Hunt is amazing. Size, talent, quickness, flexibility. Really intelligent guy that there will say himself there are technique things he needs to work on. Regardless of where players are at, there's a constant learning curve and loves that Big Rob is challenging himself with the position coach. Thinks the digital down and distance can be really valuable. Getting the information quickly will help with the flow of the game. Thought TMac looked great but there were some near misses that he'll have to get in the room and communicate with Bryce on while reviewing film. James Mitchell keeps doing right and his trust factor is increasing with the QBs. If you're right and the coverage says the ball goes there, it'll come. Had some issues at the start of camp but is trending up. Newton or Person: "It looked like today was beyond thud but short of live. What do you call that?" Canales: "No, that's thud. In my mind, that's what thud should look like. The challenge for our defensive guys is can you put your body in a position where we know that would've been a tackle." Whizzing by, tagging with two hands, etc doesn't show you whether you would've made a tackle. That's not real football. Let's the play extend because guys have to be ready to chase sometime where the ball squirts out from a pit. Can't train to say "Ah, it was a tackle" and relax but instead play with intensity through the whistle. Lathan Ransom is bringing the physical style of play that they saw on film. Has been really into the details and someone that they can count on. Has really given himself a chance to start at the other safety position. Excited for the extra energy from a game-like environment that they'll get from FanFest. Used to have four preseason games and now FanFest feels like that first one. Will give ST full speed reps to evaluate. Making plays and feeding off of the fans. Window closed quickly on the INT to finish practice. CSW baited Bryce with some movement and made a great play. Saw it from Bryce's perspective with TMac coming open. Has played all over the secondary that they can count on to speak loudly and be on the same page with his teammates.
