Hornets vs Pelicans Game Thread.

Well it's the battle of the team that used to have a really dumb name and now has an awesome name vs the team that used to have an awesome name and now has a dumb name.  Thank you Pelicans.

It's going to be a tough match up for the Hornets against Anthony Davis.  Tonight will surely test Steve Clifford's ability to be creative defensively.  The Hornets can ill afford to have another rough shooting night.  AD's presence will limit our ability to work from the inside out putting the onus on our guard play.  Considering the effectiveness of dribble penetration is limited against NO,  it will take a total team effort both offensively and defensively to come out victorious.

Keys to the game:

Knock down the three.

Kemba needs to have a big game offensively.

Lance needs to build off of his performance against NY.

Boxing out Anthony Davis.

Making free throws.

Forcing AD into early foul trouble.

The 2nd team needs to take advantage when AD is not in the game.

Lance needs to come out strong.

Al Jefferson needs to be more effecient and so does Kemba.

Marvelous is gonna have a rough game bc he's going against the brow.

Hopefully MKG plays and continues to impress. He's by far been our best player so far and I'm really proud of him. Keep it up.

This will be a tough game bc their size but hopefully we can come out strong. Stretch the floor open up the lanes and hit our threes. Bc gosh I do not wanna start out 1-3

Pellies played Memphis last night. Let's hope that wore them down a little bit.

Marvin and Al have to provide some sort of resistance in the post defensively. Speaking of Marvin, we need alot more offensive production out of him. Having the defense respect the stretch four opens things up for everyone else.

Cannot get off to another slow start.

Stop turning the ball over down the stretch.

I am so used to assuming we will get killed by a team with a star player and then I remember "oh yeah. Our roster isn't that bad, either."

The Hornets are 1-2 and during that stretch the Hurricanes (who looked like they couldn't win a game to save their lives) are 2-1 with wins on the nights the Hornets lost and the loss on Hornets opening night.

And would you look at that, both teams play at the same time again tonight...

No MKG tonight.

Henderson to start, expect Sir Peej to get some minutes.

Would rather see Neal at the 2 and Lance at the 3. Also less Maxiell and more Biz. I still don't understand these rotations. I know it's early, but some of Cliff's moves have been head scratchers.

Well I think on defense Lance would be a better defender on Gordon.

As far as the rotation I understand why Biyombo doesn't get a ton of PT.   Hairston not getting any action is still a bit perplexing.  Only thing I can think of is maybe was a disciplinary action against his little off the court incident he had.

Or it's simply veteran getting preference over rookie regardless of form, which is very Larry Brown-esque and therefore concerning.

I can understand sitting Vonleh for a year as he is very young and needs a year to learn the NBA game and fill out those incredible measurables that he has (on par with pre-draft Anthony Davis, I believe) but in Hairston's case if nothing else he can provide you a three point specialist off the bench.

    • Push em to the brink!!! Shut em down Freddie!
    • I tend to look at all of these guys and wonder how committed they are to doing special teams? It's a big deal when you're fighting for roster spots. And we need massive refreshes to all phases of the special teams game. And the idea that four or five of these players could see rotational use outside of special teams would be a win. This team has accumulated quite a bit of dead wood over the last five years and its time to take an axe to some of it. These new fellows have a shot to benefit from that if they can really push. That being said, wow that receivers room is crowded right now. I'm not sure if I was a vet player with more than 2 years experience other than Adam Thielen if I'd be too sure of my future here. Tet is guaranteed a spot, Coker earned his for sure and they aren't done with XL developing yet. That's only two to three spots left for the entire room. It's going to be very competitive and better for Bryce's future, too. Safety and linebacker are the opportunity spots here this season. There's room for the right guy and we may see a starter eventually from one of these UDFAs, either by merit or injury.
    • Aho and Jarvis just gripping it too tight right now. Relax, play their 200 ft game and the shots will start to find the net. Freddie has been excellent and welcome back Mista Svechnikov. Burns.....well, thank goodness for Slavin.
