regardless of the outcome of this game, Rivera needs to be fired tomorrow.

I'm not referring to after a 12-4 season, scot, and I dont think you're that naive.

If we want to get really technical, Rivera shouldve been fired before Gettleman ever came on. If we're being completely honest from there, if he wasn't fired before Gettleman, he shouldve been fired by Gettleman once he came on.

Once we kept him and he accidentally went 12-4 because he was coaching as a completely different person due to being scared shitless, then we had every game since out last win to make the same decision.

Point is, considering all that already happened to get us to this season, Rivera shouldve been fired long before this week.

Richardson didn't give Gettleman that option. He said Rivera was staying long before the GM choice was made.

No GM is gonna fire a head coach in that situation.

I would hand Ron a shovel tomorrow and tell him he is going to shovel poo for 12 hours a day for the next 3 years with zero days off and if he doesn't like he he can resign.  We would actually be better off with him shoveling poo than having anything to do with this team.

I'm never in favor of firing head coaches during the season.

Watching this game, you might be able to talk me into it.

Lord almighty we still play the Saints and Falcons in the domes :(

Why?

Fired is fired. If anything you should support it. It sends a message to the team and you also get to see if any other position coaches can do better

Rivera only made the changes and took on his Riverboat persona because his job was literally on the line.

Now we see him right back to his conservative style when the heat is off.

We should have given him one more season to prove that 2013 was not a fluke, simple as that.

That I agree with, but no one could have foreseen that this disaster would happen.

Rivera has proved over and over for 4years how stupid a coach he is.

Which goes to show just how good last seasons team was

Bah! All those guys were easily replaceable! Herp derp! Look at Mitchell in Pittsburgh now hurrr hurrr hurrr! Look at Smitty in his wheelchair in Baltimore because he is an old decrepit asshole! Look at Ginn in Arizona! We'll find another one!

You aren't going to simply absolve Gettleman of responsibility here are you?

Our entire staff right now is responsible for putting a plate with nothing more than a steaming pile of sh*t in front of fans week in and week out while expecting them to gladly give thanks simply because we have a team. Gettleman is the general manager, yes, he receives blame too.

Gettleman absolutely deserves some blame. I've said it a million times. He gambled last year with some of the pickups he made and it worked, so he deserved some praise. He gambled this year and it didn't work so he deserves blame. I accept that fully.

But people that think every little thing that goes wrong in a game is his fault are not only wrong, they are retarded and should be banned from breeding.

Our team sucks because we have inept coaching and our players are not talented. Now some of that is on the GM of course but we've all known for years the roster problems Gettleman inherited and that it'd take several years to get out from underneath those problems.

I don't personally buy that Gettleman was essentially forced into retaining Rivera. If that's the case, he shouldn't have taken the job. I think DG is certainly smarter than that. But even with the criticism Rivera is getting, Gettleman did him little favors offensively this offseason.

I don't recall that...

I could be wrong, but I thought I remembered Gettleman being given the option, or at least it being reported, that he was evaluating the staff.

I could be right that he said they were being evaluated going forward, and I recall some extremely awkward and tense pressers with Rivera and Gettleman afterward.

But, I think we're both right, now that I think back, because I do remember a stink about a new GM being "given" his coaching staff.

Regardless, point remains, there were clear issues with Rivera when he came in, and when those issues reappeared this season, he shouldve gotten the axe immediately.

I don't really disagree with any of your points here, we seem to be on the same page.

I think we can all agree that fans deserve much better than what we have been witnessing the last several weeks. It's shameful.

Montsta, brother, this thread is about Rivera being a piece of poo whom should be fired.

Gettleman was brought up in the discussion, but I didnt see anyone in this thread blaming him for "each and every" little thing that is going wrong on the field.

As I said earlier in the thread, these are two subpar teams, the difference between the team winning and the team getting their ass stomped is coaching.

You won't hear any arguments from me. I was one of the last on the fire Rivera bandwagon but if they left him in Minnesota you'd hear nothing from me. I hope he gets dropped tomorrow. He's garbage. My beef is people somehow going up the ladder and saying Gettleman should be fired because Ron shouldn't have been here in the first place. He was given this staff and a no talent roster and salary cap problems. If there is no progress after this purge then sure maybe Gettleman has to go.

    • What's up gents, the OGs remember me, the guy who single-handedly gave the Panthers the greatest uniform in history moniker. Not too long after that I got involved with Pro Football Focus (pre-Collinsworth acquisition) and ended up taking backseat here to preserve some objectivity. But from a distance I noticed a lot. After the end of the Cam era this place devolved into the most un-fun, petty, negative cesspool of whining and bitching that has ever graced the internet. The worst part of it all is that the level of discussion turned into the most ill-informed, hot-take, unnuanced crap, rife with people talking out of their posteriors as if they have any clue about what they are watching. Once you get into the professional side of the sport and actual film rooms, you start to understand there's an absurd number of moving parts to pretty much every snap and the details you are privy to are truly only half the picture. The absolute most important thing I learned from being part of professional level football analysis is that quarterbacking is literally the most intricate and difficult position in all of professional sports, and that the NFL itself is struggling to develop any workable model that allows them to understand what makes one succeed vs what makes one fail. Because of this paradox it has also made the quarterback position itself grossly overvalued from a fan and media standpoint, creating an absurd fixation on the results delivered by a single player who has to rely on the contributions of everyone around them. This also drives the dreaded inflation of QB salaries that inevitably cause even elite teams to lose key talent all to pour cash into the one player supposed to be able to single-handedly elevate the entire team (and defense and special teams and coaching and ownership by some mysterious proxy), yet without those same players even talented teams can wander the wilderness searching for the right guy to take advantage of their talent window. The discussions the last few years around Bryce has personified this insanity, as this board has devolved into some sort of electronic civil war between the hyperbolic Young supporters and the vitriolic Bryce haters. The reality, like practically everything in this world, is somewhere in the middle. He has traits that can absolutely elevate a team with creativity, play recognition, off-arm angle throws, mental toughness, etc. He's also physically limited, with mostly "good-enough" qualities for most situations that a professional quarterback is asked to do, and will never be an overpowering physical force like pre-injury Cam. But "good-enough" physicality represents a large majority of championship-winning quarterbacks, even in the modern era. There's a reason the corpse of Peyton Manning took the chip from elite physical specimen Cam, because the team surrounding him was talented enough to get him there, while we all know Cam was the driving force of that 2015 team. That's no knock on him, that's just how the game of football tends to work: the more complete team usually wins. The summary is this: if this team lives or dies solely on the performance of its quarterback, then it is absolutely a paper tiger even if he plays brilliantly week in and out. There are no superheroes in this sport, there are only conduits that proxy the collective efforts of much of the team around them. And no one alive can tell you how the position is played perfectly, it's all a confluence of circumstance and what unique collection of traits each player brings to the position, which can never be truly recreated season after season, even for the same player on the same team. If this place remains a raging hellscape of idiotic hot takes I will happily remove myself again and do something more productive for yet another decade, but maybe's there hope that we can all get back to the old adage, and keep pounding.
