It wasn't that long ago when we could rape our wives (wasn't called rape at the time) we were just exercising our God given rights as husbands.

Hardly anyone cared if women complained to the authorities and little was done to stop it.

The NFL is a business and they don't want wife and child beaters representing their brand. For some reason domestic abuse charges get the leagues' corporate sponsors all riled up.

Football players that don't like the NFL's new policies towards abuse are welcome to consider creating their own football league. One that doesn't have rules about abusive behavior.

Anyone wonder how many corporate sponsors will be lining up to advertise with that league?

You've missed the entire point with each of your last several posts. Nobody here is condoning or otherwise arguing about the facts, accusations or any other part of the specific cases involved. It has nothing to do with the "good ol' days" or "living in the past." C'mon man, it's not like domestic abuse just started sometime in the past off-season.

 

The issue is the manner in which the league is trying to play catch up and create rules along the way and the obviously random choice of actions taken against a player. 

 

Donte Stallworth: killed a man while driving under the influence. Suspended 16 games.

Leonard Little: killed a woman while driving under the influence. Suspended 8 games.

Michael Vick: plead guilty to Federal charges in the Bad Newz Kennel investigation, including providing gambling funds and animal cruelty resulting in the death of captive dogs. Suspended 16 games under the same Roger Goodell personal conduct policy. 

Adrian Peterson: plead no contest to child abuse charges. Suspended 16 games and counting.....

It's not that the NFL punished him, most people are fine with his suspension for his crime, it's the way the NFL is making crap up as they go. If that second Ray Rice video disn't come out, Rice, Peterson, & Hardy would all be playing this weekend.

The NFL is making rules up on a day to day basis, & changing any other rules, and bend crap every which a way on a case by case basis. They are a mess right now.

This situation reminds me a lot of the Tailhook fiasco in Vegas during the 1990s. The Navy faired no better in the court of public opinion than the NFL is now.

Realistically, the NFL is probably handling this issue as well as most businesses would and possibly better. The main difference: Had a Lowes employee been terminated for allegations of domestic abuse the story would have likely never been covered by the local media, much less the national. Even if it had, the story would have disappeared within a few days at most.

Bottom line: There has been a seismic shift in the public's attitude towards athletes and domestic violence recently. While some may consider the NFL handling of the issue ham-handed, for NFL players the choice is rather simple: Refrain from committing any acts of domestic violence or prepare to look for another line of work.

The Carolina Panthers are paying Greg Hardy, not the NFL. Let the Carolina Panthers decide how Greg Hardy should be disciplined within a set of parameters or guidelines established by the league. Kind of like sentencing guidelines, and the franchise decides within those guidelines.

However, as I stated previously, paying Greg Hardy to sit at home and collect his $13M is not a punishment to him in any way, shape or form. It punishes the team, period. By placing Greg Hardy on the "Commissioner's Exempt List" the league punished the Carolina Panthers. There's no other way to explain it. The ionly benefit to the team or the league is the fact Greg Hardy's name is getting mentioned on Sunday afternoons.  

 

If the league is going to maintain their position they can remove a player from a team while the legal process of the local jurisdiction takes place, then the league needs to also find a mutually acceptable method to "subsidize" that team since the  adverse effects of putting a player on "paid leave" are felt by the team. Why are the Carolina Panthers being punished by Greg Hardy's absence?

 

The league should allow Carolina, or any other team, the ability to take Greg Hardy's salary for the period of time he is not playing and sign free agents as the team sees fit to complete their roster.
