Lakers better off without Kobe?

SportsCenter just ran a graphic where the Lakers are scoring 100 PPG with Kobe out on the floor, 105 PPG with him on the bench.  Defense was allowing 114 PPG with him on the floor, 95 PPG with him on the bench.  All stats per 48 minute basis.

 

Holy poo what a difference.  That point swing can literally change a season.

 

All you hear from Kobe nut huggers is how garbage his teammates are and they're better off with him fading away with 5 defenders in his face rather than pass it to one of the many other open players.

 

I like Kobe, but it's been a sentiment that I've shared for a while while that he hurts his team more than help them.  As long as he gets his though, I guess.

Golden State its fourth loss in 27 games left the younger Lakers feeling pretty chesty and they opened up a bit about whether they might be a better team without the Mamba.

 

“Some guys just played like ‘Django Unchained’,” Nick Young said (via ESPN), admitting he was feeling “Swaggalicious” after the 115-105 win. “They were free tonight.”

 

Minus Bryant, who had been averaging 35.5 minutes and shooting a mere 37.2 percent, the Lakers were led by Carlos Boozer’s 18 points and the team had 28 assists. Wayne Ellington, who started for Bryant, pointed out the obvious, that the victory was a group effort. Not that he meant anything by that. “We can hoop. We just showed that we can hoop. We’re a good team when we all come out together.”

Without Kobe, the Lakers passed the ball 313 times last night. They averaged 273 before last night, 3rd-fewest in the NBA per SportVU.

Granted, it was just one game, but the murmurs about whether the Lakers are a better team without Bryant are growing louder, With him on the court, the team is averaging 100.3 points over 48 minutes; without him, it’s 104.3. And without him, the team’s field-goal percentage improves from 42 percent to 48 percent, according to ESPN stats. Lest anyone miss the point about the 9-19 Lakers’ win, Swaggy P wasn’t finished. He was still thinking about movies. And Kobe.

 

“Pretty much going to have to tell Kobe to pass me the ball, pass us the ball,” Swaggy P said. “Tell him to take the backseat for a little bit. He can be ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ and I can be Miss Daisy and drive.”

Yeah Kobe fanatics, go ahead and defend that.  It's the same poo that's been said forever, but now it's his actual teammates that are tired of it and saying it, knowing his old ass will be gone soon so they don't have to worry about the hammer coming down on them.

 

Top 5 player tho.

Like I said before, Kobe is not a winner. He hasn't carried any team himself, and when he was counted on to carry a team himself they look like this. Losers.

When he won championships it was with other superstars. And with Shaq, Shaq was the better player of the two. MJ was always the alpha dog, and it was clear that Pippen was a distant second.

Is Kobe talented and entertaining to watch? Sure. But he's not who he has constantly portrayed himself to be.

      You didn’t really address the point, just like you ignored the point about the RBs initially, and saying “they are all lotto picks” is just a really silly reduction because you could say that about literally any player rookie or vet every snap, every game, every year. It is well known that different positions have different hit rates, and I would argue different types of prospects within position groups as well, and that hit rates change the further down in the draft you go. Everybody knows QB is different and that, for example, first round OL have a really high success rate. Using your lotto ticket analogy…again…you are saying a lotto ticket with a 1 in 100 chance of hitting is the exact same thing as a lotto ticket with a 1 in 2 chance of hitting (this is an example, don’t take these odds literally). The point was he is no more of a lotto ticket than the 31yr old receiver coming off a major knee injury, and in my opinion he is better odds with a higher potential “jackpot”. Saying one player is an “lotto ticket” while another isn’t is just not sound logic. You have no idea who will break out, regress, get injured, etc. There are safer bets than others, that’s all. I don’t think Diggs is a safe bet and even if he was, weighing him over all of the Panthers WRs plus 2 1k rushers is just dumb. You can disagree if you want. The list is stupid.

      Yeah, this is all projections of how it will turn out. Inevitability this list will look ridiculous in a full 2025 sesson hindsight, most likely. Still, I am pretty surprised that so many bristled at being thought of as having very, very lowly ranked WR and TE units. We literally have been for years. All you have to do is just have things stay the same and those are immediately bottom 5 units. It is easy to see why one would be reticent to have lofty expectations in the preseason. Gotta show it first when you are a perennial cellar dweller. That's just life at the bottom.

      That's my biggest concern with making him the 2C.  You split up the Aho Jarvis bromance that accounted for a lot of points.  If Jarvis excels as a C, it could help the team even more though.
