Honest discussion on Cam's accuracy issues.

I am a huge Cam Newton mark. He is my third favorite football player ever behind Jake Delhomme (Childhood hero) and a Baltimore Raven WR. He is our franchise QB and I know he will win Super Bowls for this franchise. But, why is he missing open guys? Its not like he isn't making good reads. He is scanning the field like Brady and Manning. Once he finds his WR the ball either sails or its just off the mark. This is the first year were this has been his biggest issue, which leads me to suspect that this is injury related and not an inherit problem, like say KB's drops. If we're going to go into Seattle or Green Bay and win Cam can't miss wide open guys.

everyone has good days and bad days. everyone has things they need to work on. Cam is only human despite his TD celebration. There's no use complaining about it when he has a bad day. I'm sure that he's more aware of what he needs to work on than anybody. He will correct his mistakes and play a lot better, and there's going to be days where he re-makes those mistakes. Brady, Rodgers, Manning, Brees, even Luck the messiah all have bad games.

Cam also had a lot of pressure coming his way with those blitzes. For the most part, the offense held up well. However, Cam was aware of the pressure from his blind side which is why I don't think he looked left and could have found a wide open Cotchery.

When he presses (tenses up), he messes up. At least people acknowledge that he's "frustrating" because he makes some elite passes then has periods within games where he misses too many easy ones; like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. As usual, his problem isn't really "accuracy," it's being inconsistent overall.

That's what happens when "emotion" is what fuels you. You should just be good just because you are good, not because you "care" or it matters more at a certain point. That's the real maturity that he needs: Being more businesslike with his play than just out there trying to "have fun." Once he gets there, he won't lose his focus as often. It is possible for him to use "having fun" to make his play more "businesslike." The mind is a powerful thing.

He threads the needle, makes pinpoint passes all the time, places the ball where only his receiver can get it. That's accuracy.

Then he loses focus and slips for several series.

Arizona was a ghost haunting Cam, so after Cotchery stopped on his route and he threw that interception (I saw the highlights), it probably felt like deja vu. They also needed to get that first playoff win to get that monkey off their backs, so the nerves started up (tensed up), and also Carolina is notorious for getting sloppy with a lead, so that was probably part of it, too.

If they are in Seattle next week, I expect him to play like he did in New Orleans and Atlanta because that's a foe they want to face. If it's Green Bay, I'd be surprised if he plays well since that environment/opponent won't be as "fun." He still isn't mature enough yet for every game/possession to be equally "fun."

Do we have a WR who can make those insane catches regularly and bail Newton out?

We see it across the NFL for other QB's, Calvin Johnson for Stafford, Dez Bryant for Romo, Jordy Nelson for Rodgers, Antonio Brown for Ben, OBJ for Manning, Hilton for Luck. The list goes on. Newton has obviously had his mistakes this year, but at times he literally has to be perfect.

Cam's stats would look great if Benjamin didn't drop as many balls as he does. Give Benjamin a couple of drops when Cam is on, and then look for Cam to start screwing up because of the "what more do I have to do" thoughts creeping in, lol.

Again, this is the kind of "maturity" Cam needs. He needs perspective on a lot of things. It's not all about what you do. Sometimes you can do everything right and still fail. Other people mess up too. You don't need to try to change anything about what you did when someone else messes up. Just keep doing exactly what you were doing. Keep passing the same, keep going to the same guys even if they just dropped the last two. Get over it. Put it out of your mind. Don't think about it at all, because you didn't screw up. They are professionals, you know what they are capable of, they will eventually get over it just like you've had to do many times.

Apparently that's a less Shula also needs to learn. If it's working, keep working it.

As a QB, Cam needs to be more like a "machine." Machines are consistent. They just do what they do. That's what the best players are.

It seems like he has regressed mechanically. His footwork has been hella sloppy, he isn't stepping into throws, he is not following through on a lot of them, and it almost seems like his internal clock is not working properly, IE: he is attempting to get the ball out without proper tech in order to not be hit, even in a clean pocket. It is certainly worrisome, but not something he can't overcome.

He left it all on the field yesterday, and that much was very clear.

    • I appreciate the honesty in your posts--I am not sure Canales is rusing(?) because I don't think we are good enough yet to draft players for depth on day 1.  I do think we are in limbo, fwiw.  At 19, I think you are drafting second rounders in the first.
    • We are in a unique situation here. Just my opinion. Three things: Moton’s playing health has been gradually declining as he is aging, while his contract is a drag on the payroll.  Something will give with him sooner than later but I think 2026 could be it.  So.. need a right tackle by 2027. At the latest.    Icky’s individual situation is unique as well. They would have had an extension done by now if not for the injury. We only have him for this year. With no assurance he will ever be the same player.  It would be reckless just to assume. Now we have Walker for one year. And that is a major relief. Maybe he is the answer, but the team that knows him best let him go and it was cheap for us to sign him. So how much did they value him?    We look to be needing two tackles by 2027.  And have poo for depth this year as well. So anyway we could draft a guy for 2027 RT and groom him this year, and see how Icky does, and act as needed in 2027. Spread out filling the two holes over 2 years.    Then I remember, hey if Bryce doesn’t get a Lot more consistent do they extend him? Hoping not, if he isn’t really good.    So then we are looking at the 2027 draft which people say is gonna be loaded with QBs. If we need a LT and a QB what is the pick gonna get spent on?   Taking into account the recovery success rates cited here on the Icky surgery, you might want to plan for him to not be the same player. rather than assume he will be and get caught with your pants down.  It is a tough situation.    And factor in that it is critically important to protect this QB, always, but especially this year where it is said to be make or break. And how you might feel about that.    All of it points to a real possibility that these things converge in the negative, like Bruce sucks and Icky is not the same. In that case if you want to be assured of getting LT secured, the only place you can do that through the draft could be very well be 2026 1st round.     For me, I would like to err on the side of caution.  Cover for these outcomes. It wouldn’t be fun. Added benefit is if we do have a tackle go down this year we will have a guy there. Because I don’t know what we have now.
    • I agree. In a perfect world I wouldn’t want to draft another WR, but in this draft it’s fine based on the value of who will be there at #19.  All of the top tier guys worth pick #19 at other positions of need will be long gone. Only exception is Dillon Thieneman, but he’s almost a shoe in for the Vikings as the Harrison Smith replacement. Some posters on here want to draft an OT just to check a box without realizing the concerns and risk that comes along with said player. Sounds like XL to me… desperately drafting need… KC is a pretty safe player.  Produced all 3 years in college and last year in the SEC vs a lot of top corners in this years draft. He single handily dropped the South Carolina CB Brandon Cisse’s draft stock with how bad he abused him.   Sometimes it’s best to try and hit a double instead of going for the home run. This draft screams “go for the double”. Esp in the first.
