Let's Talk About Chris Conley

Any Georgia fans or otherwise that can give us some insight on why this physical freak is not projected higher?

Take a look at these off the chart numbers:

http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/chris-conley?id=2552652

His hands were inconsistent at the combine, catching well in some drills and not so well in others. Anybody watch him in college have a good grasp on whether this is an issue?

Interested to know what round we should be taking a realistic look at this kid. His measurables scream top 10, and by all accounts he's a high character guy, so I'm beginning to be pretty interested in the second round as long as his hands aren't stone.

Flowers/Collins/Fisher in the first and Conley in the second or third? What say you Huddle?

His main problem is that Georgia is a run first team that ran a balanced offense with a QB who didn't necessarily have the best deep ball, and that he hasn't had to be relied upon like some of the other receivers in this year's draft.  He probably isn't going to ever be on the A list, but I believe that he could be a solid pro if coached up and given the opportunity. His drops are overblown (he picked a bad day to have a bad day), but he does seem to suffer from lapses in concentration on occasion, but no so much that he has been labeled as having bad hands.

Saying that he has worse hands than Coates, or that his hands are awful is simply not accurate.

I would keep an eye on him and monitor how he does in workouts, but I wouldn't dismiss him.  You will likely get truer indications as to his professional viability from the information from his workouts, as well as from the opinions of scouts after they seriously watch film on this guy, which they will undoubtedly do throughout the next few weeks.

If you want the real lowdown on Conley listen to what I'm saying.

Possibly so as I admittedly didn't watch much UGA football this season, but the kid couldn't catch poo at the combine, that's for sure.  He looked like a guy who would get knocked for his hands even if he was a DB.

I just don't get it. There are so many college WRs with terrible hands. I get it that you want to try to give your best athletes a chance to get the ball in their hands, but when you look at this year's safety class and it is so weak, imagine if they'd given a guy like Coates the chance to play FS.

It just seems like we have the exact opposite phenomenon with WRs/DBs compared to OL/DL. It seems like all the good jumbo athletes are playing DL. There is a serious lack of athletic OTs coming out these days and that's one thing that really drives those guys up draft boards. On the flip side, look at the safeties this year. Hot trash. Meanwhile, there are several tremendous height/weight/speed guys trying to play WR who just can't catch a football. Those guys used to be DBs.

This is my theory, I have 0 facts to back this. With the RB devalued, more and more are trying to be WRs rather than RBs. Same for the poor safetys, the money for players is @ CB. Plus with the "yes" man groups and agents in this era, its add to problem as well. You cannt flip them poor WRs to DBs, cause its totally different. It would be like driving in reverse for the rest of your life.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
