Andy Reid screws the Eagles

PFT: Andy Reid costs the Eagles another one

The guy Chip Kelly replaced as the coach of the Eagles might have helped cost him the guy he wanted most in this draft.

According to Peter King of Sports Illustrated, a conversation between Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt and Chiefs coach Andy Reid last week helped convince Whisenhunt to hold onto the second pick in the 2015 NFL Draft and take Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota.

Reid told Whisenhunt about the 1999 draft, when Mike Ditka was running the Saints (into the ground), and offered his entire draft so he could take running back Ricky Williams. Reid’s Eagles said no thanks, used their pick on Donovan McNabb, and were set at quarterback for a decade.

“I was talking to Andy today,’’ Whisenhunt told King. “He told me the story about Ditka offering a whole draft for his pick. I understood what Andy was saying. It certainly helped solidify what I was thinking—that’s for sure.”

So while it’s not exactly Reid’s fault that Kelly’s plan to build an all-Duck army of kung fu killers was spoiled, the former Eagles coach might not have helped.

Ouch.

Oh the Super Bowls they won on the back of McNabb!

I'm drawing a blank.....was it 5 or 6?

They may not have accomplished the ultimate goal with McNabb, but the sustained success they had with he and Andy Reid for a decade can't just be overlooked.

Exactly.  There have been a lot of really good QB's that never won a SB.

I'm pretty sure most fans would happily trade our record during that period for theirs.

Depends on how you truly want to gauge success.

One NFC championship? Meh. Better than nothing.

Was he really "set"? Every QB he dealt with looked wayyyy better than they really were. Was McNabb really "done" when he got to Washington? Or did he just have a slight Feely/Couch/dude in last two years with Reid/Vick Syndrome going on?Falsely advertised.

The saying, "Reid's QB carwash", wasn't built on imaginary scenarios

I couldn't tell you our records vs theirs. I just remember "Buffalo Bills of the NFC, wait, at least the Bills lost in the Super Bowl"

The Eagles were pretty consistent in the Reid era.  Definitely saw more playoffs than we did.

Reid's coaching prowess may be debatable, but his overall record stands pretty well.

The issue is, McNabb was a much better prospect (more of a sure thing, and pro ready) coming out than Mariota. I don't see Mariota being a franchise QB, to be honest. So I would've taken the picks and players. But if they really feel confident that he'll be their guy for the next decade then yes they made the right decision. I was hoping to see Philly trade all that crap for Mariota only for him to bust and Kelly to have run the Eagles into the ground for the next decade. Oh well.

I was hoping for Philly to get Mariota too, but I have to admit this aspect of the final outcome is kind of amusing.

Can't dispute. But at the end, they were losers, to the Patriots of course, just like us

    • lol well that kinda ended up working out in the end, even though I still don't have my jersey yet. Was supposed to ship by tomorrow this time, but just got another email saying it was delayed another 3 weeks and because it's been delayed so long, I had to tell them to keep the order or cancel it, but gave me a 25% off my next order as an apology. Well, my original fear came true and they are now selling the FUSE version (but still not the Blue unfortunately) before the one I ordered was ever shipped. But that's awesome, because I was able to use that coupon to order the FUSE instead and then cancelled the original order.  So I got the jersey I wanted for only $6.30 more than the crappier version costs, and it also says it will be shipped immediately and get here early next week, or 2 weeks before the other was now supposed to be shipped out.
    • I've watched this and think we are well underway.  Believe it or not, Bryce is a big part of this.  The way he bounced back with such grace.  And we've got a lot of young players who want to make their mark, Dave is giving them an opportunity.  I loved our draft.  I like the number of guys we brought in, and they will help build the culture we want under Dave.  We're getting closer, and I think we'll see more wins this year than most of the board. The right culture breeds winning, and winning builds the right culture.  Imho, it's coming.
    • As others have said it's both. One creates the other. But it also takes time sometimes years. And there have been teams lately with new car smell coaching staffs that looked like they were putting it together quickly but things came crashing back down to Earth. Sustainability is the key. For that to happen the meddling of our owners has to stop and they cannot be tempted to return to their ways over any bump in the road either.
