This should make for an interesting discussion.

Say you're the GM of the Seattle Seahawks right now.  Do you pony up and pay Wilson at the risk of diluting your elite defense?  Or do you keep the elite defense intact but take a gamble on finding another franchise QB?  For arguments sake, let's assume Cam's contract is the floor for Wilson's contract.

I chose elite defense, because I can't justify investing a mega contract in Russell Wilson when I think you can credit a lot of his success to beast mode and that defense keeping the pressure off of him.

Put it this way. Seattle just extended their 29 year old running back before their 26 year old quarterback.

If you take Lynch, and the Seahawks defense out of the picture, are they even in the playoffs?

Wilson is good, but to call Cam's contract "the floor for Wilson's contract" is laughable.

Wilson will get paid more than Cam, but you put Cam on that team last year and they would have blown the Patriots out of the building. You need a QB more than ever in this league but look at the Texans who went 9-7 with Mallet, Savage, and Fitzpatrick as their QBs. Also look at Alex Smith with the Chiefs in 2013.

Cam has thrown about 450 more yards per season, 8 less passing TD's, and 16 more INT's.  Russell has a rating of 98 while Cam is around 85.

 

Has Cam had to do more?  Yes, but I think that Wilson could handle more than he is given, if they need him to.  Cam is a better/more physical runner, but that's not what you pay your QB to do, and Wilson isn't too shabby.

​If Seattle/Carolina continue to draft well, this is all a moot point.  However at some point, you have to decide who you pay and who you let walk.  For the record, I think Seattle will continue to have a good defense, but I don't think it will continue to be elite.

Considering that Wilson will be getting paid more than Cam, that Seattle is paying RBs like Carolina used to, that they just picked up Graham, and that Seattle's defense is built on mega-stars that are all hitting FA at the same time... yes, it's likely.

Because chemistry is such a big deal the what if game is impossible. Ask Denver. Ask Patriots when they had Randy Moss. Ask the Lakers with Karl Malone.

​Add to that, Wilson has 3 playoff appearances, 2 SB appearances and an SB win.  I would take Cam any day of the week and twice on Tuesday's over Wilson, but based on what Wilson has done to this point, somebody will pay him more than Cam.

When was the last time the Carolina Panthers had a 1,000 yard RB? 2009.

Let's see here. Lynch with Wilson his first 3 seasons: (this is only including his rushing numbers by the way, he's a lethal receiving threat as well)

2012: 1,590 yards, 11 touchdowns

2013: 1,257 yards, 12 touchdowns

2014: 1,306 yards, 13 touchdowns

You cannot understate, even the slightest, the impact that Lynch has on that offense, and how that opens up their passing game. He's arguably the best RB in the league.

Good timing on this thread; I watched 3-4 games worth of film on Wilson this morning. I wanted to see for myself if he's really as good as he's hyped to be. He isn't. He is an athlete with fairly raw and inconsistent quarterback skills. His film reminded me a lot of Mike Vick from 10-12 years ago. Can make big plays with his arm, but his legs are more important. He is the definition of a game manager. Their system makes him look good; Darell Bevell makes things very easy on him. The bottom line: He needs Bevell and the rest of Seattle's support system far more than Seattle needs him.

 

Edit: I'd love to see the Seahawks give Wilson $100 million. They'd be putting their money in exactly the wrong place. But if I were their GM, I definitely wouldn't do it.

Luck is the guy who is going to get paid huge. Wilson deserves his payday, but the people talking up historical contracts for him are out of their minds.

Andrew Luck has been putting up ridiculous numbers with exactly who at RB?

Think about where Indy would be with Lynch on that roster.

      They had best show out in Week 1 there are zero,I mean zero,  excuses for that offense  defense, haven’t play together yet and they still have Mr Soft and Predictable as DC  I expect break downs at times  …but that offense returns all starters except Tremble and both Mayes and Brady are veterans and can play LG and know the system not up for any participation awards this season they can save that practice energy for Jacksonville.     I’m sick of the, winning,  or looking competitive, when it doesn’t matter.

      There are some tough decisions that I'm eager to see the results of... Does Blackshear sneak on to the roster as RB4? Does the team go with 4 TEs or just 3 again? And has Mitchell Evans done enough to defend his roster spot from James Mitchell? Who is WR6 and is there a WR7? TMac, XL, Coker, and AT seem to be locks imo and I'm assuming Renfrow also makes it due to all of the camp praise. Who makes it between Brycen Tremayne, Jimmy Horn Jr, and David Moore? If the team goes with 7 WRs, which one of those three doesn't make it? Jacolby George and Emani Bailey both have not gotten a lot of game time. Could the Panthers be trying to hide them so that they can be stashed on the PS? Do they go with 10 OL instead of 9? Who makes it out of Walton, Carter, and Kingston? DL locks are DB, BB3, ARob, and Turk. That leaves Jaden Crumedy, Cam Jackson, Sam Roberts, Shy Tuttle, and LaBryan Ray all competing for the final 1 - 3 spots. Does DJ Johnson get IR'd and Thomas Incoom make the roster as EDGE5? What in the fuuuuuuuuuuuuck is going to happen at LB? Only locks seem to be Wallace, Rozeboom, and Cherelus (Wallace has mentioned in media how Cherelus has been big bro for him on the team). Rhattigan had some good moments against Houston, Martin-Scott is an SC guy, Krys Barnes has popped on defense and on special teams, and Windmon got time starting for the team last season. Are two of those guys going to make it or are the Panthers poaching from another team's cuts? CB5... who is it? Do they go with the 4 expected safeties or bring in a 5th? Has Ransom done enough to take the start from Nick Scott?
