Interesting article by NFL Films analyst Greg Cosell about Cam Newton

Elway and Favre were pretty similar players.

Elway just had those wheels like Cam does.

Only thing that makes them stand apart for me...passing TD's.

Elway never broke 30 passing TD's in a season, neither has Cam, although I hope that changes, while Favre hit 30+ 9 times.  Now we could just be looking at different offenses, but that's one thing that stands out to me.

Not to disparage Favre, but how many of those came after the rule changes made it tougher to defend receivers?

Strangely enough, he did it 5 years in a row from 94-98 seasons.

Not sure when all the rules changed, as it seems like it's a slow thing, almost creeping.

What does Cam do to make his receivers better besides giving them opportunities??

He doesn't make throws that are easily to catch. They come in hot, and not consistently accurate. He'll never be  70% completions guy.

His erratic throws will never completely go away. When healthy, and with decent protection he can limit them.

He still gets lazy with his footwork at times. Only Cam can change that.

he doesn't consistently lead his receivers with his throws either, although he has shown improvement the last few years.

While I believe Cam will continue to improve his game, I don't see him as a qb that makes his receivers better.

It's alright. Gettleman and coaches are building to Cam's strenghts, which will maximize his potential. All we can ask for.

    • Not sure how much he was a long term piece of this team.   Sucks to not have him as part of the rotation.   Looks like it's Lee Hunter time.
    • This post was an error. Oops and sorry for the errors in the previous one. Too slow to edit.   We’ll see what they do.
    • I am not sure he will put the over the games but we’ll probably have them.   Two things I am thinking.  We have 4 preseason games.  All the coaches have enough service time to know the standards that are in place for decades. If I recall it was play your starters just a series to start woth and build it up until week theee where play a lot and you have week four to set hour roster. Evaluate before cuts.   Bevell will certainly have the whole thing down pat.   I’d they don’t do the fries and frie air will worry too. Because it is set up to do that.     I have said since they went t three preseason people have to figure a new way are still feeling it out and trying things.  We don’t have to this year.
