True Detective Season Two

Had a feeling they were walking into a trap. Probably the mayor that tipped off the bad guys.

Again, the story continues to unfold, adding layers slowly but surely. The most interesting aspect of the story to me was Paul's "girlfriend" getting pregnant, and Paul's reaction. I think it clicked in his head that this could be the perfect front to being a straight man, or maybe it would "set him straight" in a way. He really is a tortuted mofo.

Anyway with that shootout, tons of collateral damage obviously and I imagine the detective's will get a lot of heat for that.

Oh and the last shot of the episode provides some cool imagery. Anyone else notice the picture freeze for a second to let this image sink in?

What I interpret from the shot: Ray is knocked back down after going relatively clean. This might send him back down that dark path.  Ani looks away, defeated. Paul holsters his weapon, a combat veteran. This wasn't anything he hadn't seen before. His arm across his body indicates he is still guarding himself, probably more so his secrets than from physical attack.

A couple of highlights from last night I forgot to touch on:

In a "what the fug" moment of the week, Vince Vaughn's Frank Semyon making that deal with the Iranians(?) and then getting all scary about his coffee. If you ever happen to serve Frank coffee, go ahead and assume he'll take sugar with it. That was a cool little throwback to last week's episode though. "I've never had any teeth pulled, never even had a f'ing cavity." (paraphrased)  I've never been a big Vince Vaughn fan, but he is winning me over with this performance.

The meeting with Frank and Ray in their favorite watering hole was the best yet. Looks like Frank is going to pull Ray back into the underworld, whispering sweet nothings in his ear like, "sometimes your worst self is your best self." That was probably the best line of this season so far. I know I'm ready for Ray to get back into "I'm going to butt fug your father's headless corpse with your mother" mode.

Ray shaving the 'stache in the previews for next week makes me think he's going back to Frank.

You can tell how fuged up Paul is psychologically because when the poo hit the fan and bodies started dropping, you could tell this was the first time in a long time he felt like he was in his element, his true self. Everyone is freaking the fug out or being stupid. Ani's dumbass pulled a knife like she was REALLY going to Rambo a Mexican gangbanger to death.

Frank almost certainly is infertile and his wife is taking the fall because it would devastate him. I also liked the how that Turkish dude thought he was being cute, making a thinly-veiled threat about "dental work being expensive" (probably a reference to what happened last week) and Frank basically said "Ain't nobody gonna pull MY fuging teeth out, bitch."

Also, clearly a setup. Chessani saying "Be careful out there" was a pretty obvious hint. Also the one Vinci guy saying "do we need all these men" suggests they really only wanted Paul and Ani out there. Also looked like Chessani's daughter might have recognized Ray, which would make sense, since she shut up real quick after she looked at him.

That's all I got for now.

So I guess it's safe to say by his reaction that Ray DID in fact kill the guy, but that it wasn't the guy that raped his wife. Interested to see how that dynamic with Frank works out, seeing as he's been dirty ever since cuz Frank has kinda had him in his pocket.

I feel like the first season was better, as you had a focused line of antagonism in the cult/killer aspect.

So far in season 2, people are their own enemies and I think they have kind of lost sight of a greater purpose too often and too long.

I would agree. The story is a bit more complicated and while still character driven, the frenetic plot line leads to a more labored approach to character development. The first season was cleaner. Which I think made it more enjoyable. But I'm still enjoying this season. Just not as much as the 1st.

    • I'm really not stressing about upgrading from Bryce. I'm frustrated with our inability (or refusal) to recognize overall bad QB performance and failure to seriously address the issue. QB is the most impactful position on the field, and we're not only settling for what we've been given to this point, but we've rewarded it with a fully guaranteed 5th year extension for a player that's never played 2 NFL franchise QB quality games back to back in 3 seasons. I can't understand how that's ok from a coach's or GM's viewpoint. Successful franchises don't do things like this. It just doesn't make sense.  We do not have a top half of the league QB right now. Since we don't have that player, we should be looking for him. Pickett isn't it. Grier isn't it. Bryce hasn't proven he is yet. Until you have that sure fire franchise QB, you keep looking. You're not consistently making the playoffs, a deep run, or a SB appearance without one.  What's the worst that could happen? We end up with 2 potential number 1 QBs? How horrible.
    • Easy to understand Pickett, if this is anywhere close to on point. Canales wants to get as close to Bryce as he can- get the pace and timing in the throws as close a he can to Bryce. So the other players don’t have to adjust so much, to a new guy.       If Cam was the 1, he would look for a rocket arm.  But Bryce is the 1. Look for limited in the same way.  Low velocity, plenty of air under it, feels just like home when Picket comes in. And you have the guys on the second team not having such a radical adjustment (if they have to play) like with Dalton to Bryce.    Enter Grier. I guess we will collect those types.
    • Best part is if we draft him, we can also use him as our fourth and one QB sneaker
