So much so that you've  got idiots out there claiming the confederate states were exactly like the nazis.

How are they different? Slavery was responsible for millions of deaths too. Is it better because we spread ours out over a much longer time period? lol???

Also it's not like German soldiers were fighting to preserve concentration camps and poo anymore than Confederate soldiers fought to preserve slavery. Invading Poland was literally about getting territory back they lost after WWI in what most Germans felt was an unfair armistice deal imposed by the rest of Europe, since Germany didn't even START WWI.

In the history of our damn nation.........You choose to play the "nazi" card on the confederate states?

Seriously, I can look at WWII and at least understand that it directly related to this moronic armistice the allies forced onto the Germans and that led to all the terrible things in WWII. But the Confederacy was literally just treason for an out of date production method. The cotton gin and a whole host of other inventions were already making slave labor obsolete and the rest of the world was already getting rid of it.

The the mental gymnastics by Southerners to justify slavery simply boiled down to "He dumb, Me smart; He pet, Me Master." Meanwhile the richest person in the history of the world at that time and to this day when adjusting for inflation is a black man by a WIDE margin.

But yeah, listen to racist today, they use that flag as a rally. South Carolina used that flag as a rally point ONLY FOR de-segregation, and we still have segregation to this day in white neighborhoods. God forbid a black family moves to the suburbs. If it wasn't for all this rampant private segregation (Spurred by scumbag realtors of the time and even to today because I don't put all the blame on white families) in the United States racism would be far less than what it is.

Also, we could have some real progress in politics if the GOP just stops pandering to racist white folks. I'm black and I can't even vote conservative because of the actual racist poo the party does even though I believe is Gun Rights(name a black person that doesn't like guns), Pro-life(black girls don't get abortions lol), and a smaller government(racist police, nuff said) like almost every black family does.

The Stars and Bars never truly symbolized MY south.

THESE bitches on the other hand...this is my south.

Get rid of the damn flag(s), love your neighbor and stop taking yourselves so damn seriously.  None of you are changing the world by bitching on the Huddle.

Racist people are normally the ones that spout out stereotypes.

All I can say is what it symbolizes to me, and that is the south, and my heritage.  However, it has been used as a symbol of hate, death, and terrorism and because of that that is what it symbolizes to a great many people.  And with that understanding there is no excuse whatsoever for this flag or the official confederate flag to be flying over any government building or on any public land.

White supremacy in the 1800's and early 1900's was an American problem.  Not just regulated to the south.  Life for black people in the north were not much better than the south, and in some northern states arguably worse.  Also, even though the north eventually fought for emancipation of slaves they wanted none of those free slaves in their states and wrote laws to discourage black migration.  This was particularly true of northern states that were almost exclusively white (some northern states had a black population of around 1%, and wanted to keep it that way)

Slavery is an abomination, and there is no doubt it was one of the primary causes of the Civil War, and southern economy was entrenched in the availability of free labor.  Especially states like Alabama, Mississippi, SC, and Louisiana.

So I am not trying to defend the south against that institution.  But just to remind people that white supremacy was a universal belief throughout the US.  And the fight for equality today is still nationwide.  There are active Ku Klux Klan groups and other white supremacy groups like the CCC, across the northeast and rust belt as well as places like California.

This fight against racism does not just take place in SC, or below the Mason Dixon line, or is fixed with the removal of a flag.

It is fought everyday, in every corner of the nation.  And people need to accept it.  Drop the tired tropes of reverse racism.  Stop accepting the bullshit narrative of Christian persecution,  End the rhetoric of preferential treatment of blacks by our government.  This is the rhetoric that led to the misguided beliefs of this young man.  If you are not fighting against these things, if you allow these narratives to go unchallenged,  you are part of the problem.
