Left the sunroof open during rain showers.

Bummer.

Drove over to my friend's house Friday night to head up to Sebago Lake for a weekend of golf, fishing, and beers. Came back Sunday afternoon to a car filled with thousands of pine needles and quite a bit of rain water. Luckily it was parked under a rather large tree that prevented it from being much worse. Still, however, it was definitely soaked. There was probably 3/4 of an inch of water in my cup holders for measurements sake. Ceiling around the sunroof soaked, center console carpeting drenched as well as the floors in the front and back. Unfortunately the rain didn't stop all day yesterday so I didn't have a chance to air it out and clean it up until today.

Here is what I've done so far:

1. Immediately wiped down the seats in the front and back with a bath towel. Soaked up the water in the cup holders with a rag.
2. Pulled out the floor mats and hung them up to dry in the sun
3. Used a mediocre wet vac on the floor carpeting to suck up as much water as possible
4. Left every possible door and sunroof open all day....a windy sunny day in Maine around 65-70 degrees.
5. I am currently letting a dehumidifier run all night long in the back seat of the car in the garage
6. Stepped and pushed down with my weight with paper towels on the carpeting where the floor mats usually would be

Anyone have any ideas about what else I should be doing? Tomorrow is another sunny day here and I plan on leaving all the doors and sunroof open again to air it out as best as I can naturally. I'm worried the damage is already done and I'll have mold and mildew under the carpeting of the vehicle. Or maybe my efforts have definitely helped and things will dry up naturally without further issues. I just don't know what kind of surface is under the carpeting. It could be padding that soaked up more water and under that a metal of some sort. Any ideas/input is welcomed!

Better just burn it and drive it off a cliff. Note: I can't recommend being in the vehicle for either action.

if its in the garage I'd get some fans on it in addition to the dehumidifier.  You really do want moving air on the upholstery.

Go buy some cheap box fans and run the poo out of them.

 

Also get a container of damp rid and keep in there after a lot of it dries out.

Like others have said and you have done - wet vac, dehumidifier, and fans. 

I've also heard of people placing bowls full of uncooked rice in their cars to draw our moisture, just like using rice to extract moisture from a cell phone dropped in water.

There's also a product called DampRid that I've heard of but never used.
