Despite recent trade, Panthers still in need of receiver help

I will assume the position of the people you are referring to on local sports talk SCP, as I have been that here lol.  I look at it like this SCP, if you are looking for a daily driver, and I give you the choice of having a working Daewoo or a relatively new Honda Accord/Civic (depending on your needs) for roughly the same price, which one are you picking?

Likewise, if you were looking for a sports car, and you have the means to buy them (which we do have the means to address WR), would you settle for a base model V6, or do you want to go ahead and get the V8 with all the bells and whistles.

In our scenario, a V8 is likely out there, but we haven't brought them in to check them out.  And before someone tries to rip apart this metaphor, we are in the market for an american muscle car...  Guys like Calvin Johnson are Mazeratis and KB is like a Ferrari.  Philly Brown and Bersin are Yugos.

I understand but we still have to be smart. Just because you can afford a Mazerati doesn't mean you need to buy one. Then you are committed to Z rated tires, high octane gas, and more expensive maintenance. That stuff takes away from he other things you could have to go along with it.  If I had s choice between a Mazz and a Toyota Tundra give me the Tundra.  It will get me from point a to point B and I have the flexibility to buy that UHD TV next month.

if there was a true #1 WR just sitting out there- dont we all think he would have been signed by now..?

Gman won't be able to bring in anyone that really helps the WR position- let alone, have the time to connect with Cam and learn each other to make significant impact this year. We just have to go to war hoping Ginn can improve on his 2013 year with Cam and hope Funch can just be decent (600 yds / 6 TDs).

But no one is asking for a #1...  That is the misconception.  I for one, am not asking for a #.  We have a #1, but he is injured.  I'm also assuming Funchess, if he can stay healthy, is a #2, and will step into the role of the #1 in KB's absence.  I'm asking for a quality #3, possibly a guy who could become a #2. A legit #4 even.  The problem when you don't bring in competition is that you are assuming the guys you already have are the best for the job and you're dismissing the possibility that they really aren't.

You know, on second thought. I remember when the Mustang 5.0s came out. The NC Highway State Patrol said that theirs would catch anything on the road at that time.  Those 5.0s were some humming growling sumbitches! I fell in love with the way the car sounded because you could just hear the power.

Well, I remember the first time that this dang blasted thing pulled up to my car. iI kinda looked like a mustang, and it said mustang, but I'll be damned if that thing growled like a mustang when it took off. They had bastardized Mustangs with 4 cylinder engines! I immediately labeled them "fake Mustangs!"  I don't want no fake Mustang! Don't try to tell me that thing is a Mustang because it don't sound like a Mustang and it don't perform like a Mustang! I don't know what it is, but it's not a Mustang. I'd rather have a Corolla, Impala, Stratus, anything...but not that fake ass Mustang.

all this hyperbole.  "no one's looking for a #1 here!"   "there are v8s out here and this team is just too stubborn to care!!1" Who are we complaining about that's just sitting there that's starting quality* or even high-level situational depth, that we haven't looked at?

*the only relevant term - we can stop using code words for what you're saying you want

I can tell you a big part of the issue is some of our loudest complainers put way too much value on guys that they think we should have gone after.

Afraid I just don't buy the notion that guys like Hakeem Nicks, Denarius Moore and the like would mean a receiving corps that puts the fear of God in people.

(it's just trading one set of marginal/backup quality guys for a different set)

some argue it is trading a set of marginal/backup quality guys for guys that really should be practice squad/not on a roster....

If you think that Philly Brown and Brenton Bersin are better than Hakeem Nicks and Denarius Moore, then I have a piece of lakefront property in Florida to sell you.

Any upgrade, however marginal that it is, or you may think that it is, is an upgrade.

At the very least, simply because of their past body of work and the fact that they are still relatively young, should give them some benefit of doubt in regards to our lackluster receiving corps.

That's just how it is.

Ah yes the old "they used to be good, so they must still be" logic. Lord knows that argument never fails.

Reality: Those guys aren't as good as you think they are. And if passing on them is some huge mistake, it sure seems like one an awful lot of teams were willing to make.

    • Maalik Murphy will be eligible, big QB with big upside but I’m assuming he stays in school unless he has a great season. Riley Leonard has a lot of upside as well and I expect him to look a lot better at Notre Dame.  I’m also curious to see Connor Weigman at Texas A&M. He put up some solid numbers in limited games.
    • There's a lot of guys with all the tools you look for that could be in 2025.  Thing is, their in-game ability to take command of an offense has only shown in flashes. And they have their flaws. Carson Beck 6'4 220, above avg to great arm strength, great size, another UGA product or more? Shedeur Sanders 6'2 215, above avg arm, playmaker.. is a diva presence a legit issue? Drew Allar 6'5 240 lively, monster arm - outstanding measurables and tools.  Stuck in a bad offense/can he show more in big moments? Quinn Ewers 6'2 205, above avg arm strength, showed some iffiness - big year ahead Jalen Milroe 6'2 220, dual threat, great arm ... can he pull it together this year? Cameron Ward 6'2 225, great arm, pocket presence, can be too aggressive but has a lot to love
