Week 3 WIN against New Orleans - Stats & Analysis

Ronde said during the broadcast that "70 or 75%" of games in the NFL are decided by 7 points or less.  I don't know where he gets this information but this week only 6 of the 15 games (40%)  were decided within that margin.  It might have just been Ronde being Ronde.

  1. Full snap counts later, but one more for now. Tre Boston’s snaps: at JAX - 4, vs HOU - 1, vs NO - 16.

  2. Star Lotulelei’s conditioning must have been pretty good. Played 48 snaps in his season debut. Kawann Short had 49, most of DTs.

I took a bit of time to look closely at Cam's stats side by side for each of the 3 games.

It's great to see his yards going up every week, as well as the yards/completion.   It's pretty startling to realize Cam had exactly the same number of attempts yesterday as in week 1 against JAX, and only 2 more completions, but an 80% increase in passing yards.   Those deep balls are doing wonders.  And obviously, putting the fear of the deep ball into opposing defenses can only help open up other possibilities for our offense, including the run game.

98 dropbacks by QBs in the past two games vs. Panthers. Just 2 sacks for -5 yards (including one for zero yards officially on scramble)

Sacks don't tell whole story of course. Panthers D still getting pressure. But you want a better average than a sack per 49 dropbacks.

I've got a stat for Ronde;

Every single concussion happens between the ears.

Playing around on Sporting Charts....

Was checking out receiving 1st down %

A few of our players may not have a lot of receptions, but they're making them count.

Funchess has 3 receptions - all for 1st downs.  Same for Ed Dickson:  3 receptions, 3 first downs.

Greg Olsen has had 15 receptions - 12 of which (80%) were for 1st downs

So... it's looking really likely that Cam will break an NFL record this season....!  Isn't it sweet to see our smiling QB's face between two Hall of Famers... and know that he's gonna hold this record soon!

Cam Newton approaching history

Just three games into his fifth season, the Panthers' starter notched his 26th game with a passing and rushing touchdown. Only Steve Young has done it more in NFL history.

Again, thanks to the great data collected by Sporting Charts...

Here's one of the keys to our 3 - 0 start.  Net Turnover Points = 16.

http://www.sportingcharts.com/nfl/stats/team-net-turnover-points-statistics/2015/

We've scored 16 points off of our opponents turnovers, while our opponents have scored 0 points off of our turnovers.  Only GreenBay & Carolina have allowed 0 points on turnovers in the league so far.

The short PFF article with grades from yesterday is now posted

https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2015/09/28/no-car-grades-newton-shreds-saints/

Carolina Panthers

— A bargain signing last December, Kyle Love has proven to be a more than capable run defender when asked to do so. His +2.6 run defense grade was earned on just 16 snaps as he made Senio Kelemete’s afternoon in the run game miserable. Though Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short are the entrenched starters on the interior, Carolina seems to have found good value on the cheap with Love as a strong rotational player.

— The majority of Cam Newton’s +3.8 grade this week came from his passing rather than his running, as the young signal caller found his matchup against New Orleans’ secondary an ample opportunity to test his arm strength. He went three of six on passes over 20 yards in the air, but the middle of the field is where Newton struck gold. He completed 13 of 15 for 240 yards and two touchdowns.

— He may have given up the lone sack on Sunday, but LG Andrew Norwell has been an excellent addition to a line many thought would struggle in 2015. That sack was his only blemish in pass protection, and the young guard held his own in the running game. With just one negative grade in his last ten games, Norwell is earning his spot as the anchor of the Panthers’ offensive line.

Top Performers:

QB Cam Newton (+3.8)
DT Kawaan Short (+2.9)
C Ryan Kalil (+2.9)
DT Kyle Love (+2.9)
LG Andrew Norwell (+2.0)

    • I think Ransom will be a solid player for us.  He played beside Caleb Downs, the cornerstone of the Ohio State defense last year and some have him as a top 5 pick for the 2026 draft.  He was characterized as the smart, instinctive, versatile safety.   I just don't think S will be a liability unless we have injuries.  I am very interested in seeing what they have in the three UDFA safeties; I see one making the roster. As for CB, I think they are higher on Wade-Smith than most of us are. Again, depth is a concern.  We have to hope Jackson has another solid season and Horn does not injure his leg or toe on one of the yard lines.   I am not sure I would compare it to last season's DL because this year's DL will cover a lot of deficiencies, but I know what you mean---our weak link.
    • Lol.  Now you make me defend DG. We had the best IOL in the league under DG and Oher looked solid until he got that bad concussion. DG drafted Moton and Daryl Williams as well. The OL fell apart under Hurney 2.0 and Fitterer. DG also drafted Star and Short. Sorry, but that was all in 5 drafts so let’s not make stuff up about not trying to improve hog mollies. Gettleman did a ton wrong and took the wrong guys, but he and Rivera had a deep and talented team and it got blown up really quickly. Also, I love Cam but he wasn’t the best QB in the league. He had the best year in 2015 but he wasn’t Brady. I think Dan has had a solid offseason, way better than last year but I’m not putting on rose colored glasses until we actually have a 10 win season. Again, Dave and Ron had 3 10+ wins seasons out of 5.
    • Yeah I wont often comment on a coddled generation and participation trophies but this sort of begs for it. Also how did an athlete achieve at that level without getting a thicker skin?
