Philly Brown in Singleback

Can someone explain the handful of plays we ran last night with Philly lined up in the backfield behind Cam?

It looks like they are going to maybe reverse, but then he just kind of settles in a few seconds before the snap. I understand faking, or running, a reverse with the correct timing, but don't understand how we're running it. I don't think I've ever seen him get the ball from this position, and he doesn't really seem to have a roll in the play, even to effectively block.

Anyone?

if a defense is really stacked up at the line and they are thinking of doing a zone read.....bringing in Philly gives Newton an outlet and makes the defender assigned to Cam now have two jobs.

So if the Stewart lane is clogged off the snap it gives Cam more wiggle room on his keeper.  Means his defender has to not just worry about his run but a pitch.  Slow D on the zone read play and gives him an option.

at least that is why I think they do it.

I think you're talking about basically this play. Shula has been using since he became OC. The idea is to get the linebackers to think you're running an option one way then send the RB with the ball the opposite way. Though I don't recall us really ever actually doing the option.

We have run the option out of this look, i have no idea where to find it, but the first season we had Ginn we did, fake the hand-off and run the pitch on the back-side, I wanna say vs the Saints.

Yeah, I'm sure we have a couple times, but mostly it's the counter to the RB every time.

    • Bryce and Dave will determine how many games this team wins next year. It’s not on the WRs. The RBs. LBs. This is about 2 things: 1. Can Bryce continue to come up big in the few key downs that decide most games?  2. Can Canales evolve his play calling to counter punch like the big boys do. Half time adjustments.  teams that score 30+ points on the regular win more games than not. That’s on Bryce and Dave. The offense is top 10 at every position group, save for TE and QB. A baller TE is gravy but not crucial when the receivers are dudes.  The defense is the defense. It’ll be better this season, hopefully by a large margin, but Dave/Bryce is really where it’s at.
    • Normally I'd wholeheartedly agree with this. But I feel like teams figured out this offense after the Raiders game. Bryce was so inept the first 2 games that we couldn't really even run the offense. Dalton's first game showed what we had. But after that game, coverages got a lot tighter and windows were smaller. When Bryce came back in, his ability to extend plays made a big difference. It's really difficult to stop a QB that can beat/escape 1on1 tacklers. It puts a lot of pressure on the defense when you blitz. And he was completing throws in tight coverage with anticipation. Point being Bryce wasn't throwing to wide open receivers that were schemed open by the offense. Occasionally yes. But not often.
    • With the additions we've made to our roster combined with the state of the division and the conference as a whole there is no excuse for this team not to make a legitimate push for 8-9 wins. Anything less is honestly inexcusable. There will be no more free passes for being a doormat in this iteration of the league where even mediocre teams are competing for playoff spots.
