The narrative that Cam finally learned how to play QB this season

I hate that narrative, I've heard Joe Buck say it yesterday, numerous of retired QB's and analyst have said the same thing recently. They keep saying Cam was just an athlete playing QB his first couple of seasons, how he didn't know how to read defense and ran to much, wasn't a pocket passer.

WTF did they even watch the panthers? This is the same Cam that broke rookie records, he's always been a pocket passer, we barely even ran the read option his rookie season. Yeah Cam has improved, but they are making out to seem like he was some bum before this season.

I hear ya.

I think, Ryan Kalil had the best answer for that sort of thinking on the recent NFL Network, Daniel Jeremiah piece, that talks to his former college coaches and Kalil.

Someone posted it here earlier.

Hang on now, it's not that he learned how, he's mastering his craft.

its improved a lot.

No more overthrows, or far less than last year.

I understand he's healthy and that has a part in it but just getting experience has been the missing piece it seems for Cam.  I don't think there was a light bulb moment but a gradual evolution from potential to results.

major hard work and dedication is paying off in a big way for Cam and this team as a whole.

Bingo!

You said it all.

And to the OP: FWIW, Mick Mixon's been speaking on Cam's behalf; trying to set the record straight on his development during his out of town media appearances this week.

EXACTLY! I've always thought Cam has been the same. He's just had a very shitty oline until this year. I've been saying ever since his rookie year that he could dominate the league with a competent line and now look at him.

He has improved.  It's not bad or uncool to admit. He put in the work in many ways and it's showing.

Guys who love to win AND are talented like crazy do this.

I thought only the chamber of commerce types cared what outsiders thought.

They can no longer dismiss him, so they had to come up with an excuse as to why they've changed their minds.

This.  Cam came into the league as a very unique and fairly unknown talent.  He was instantly successful, but has improved on how he plays the position on a per snap basis.  He's not looking to win the stat sheets, he's aiming to win the game.

I hate this narrative. He didn't finally learn to play QB, he grew and matured. Big damn difference. Cam broke records his rookie year. He's known how to play the position, he just had to grow up and mature. It also helps that an offense was built around him. Continuity and stability works as well. I really dislike this.

I really like when he is mic'ed up and people can hear him making calls at the LOS. Like Peyton is the only QB that can do that. Cam is regularly getting the offense right to move the ball. His mental game is not being talked about enough.

I agree with this. His mental game is one of the best. It's been said so many times that he calms down and the game moves slow for him in the fourth quarter. He doesn't have a panic factor in him. I think he displayed that in the New Orleans game and in the Giants game this season.    Cam is coming into his own and it's a beautiful thing. Great years to come from Cam.

    • Then why are they paying QBs so much compared to other players? QB are making so much it's harder and harder to pay other players. If a guy plays like 1 of 11 then there pay should be in line with that. Not all QB should be breaking the bank just because your next or a former 1st rounder There is a reason they say try to win it all on a QB rookie deal because after that they can cripple a team on what it can do. I would rather not do that for a bottom 1/3 QB. Cam and Jake have been the only QBs worth investing long term into this team has had I would rather not lower the bar. If a guy don't got the IT factor and it shows I would rather not invest long term into them and keep looking
    • Aho…come out and prove me wrong boy.
    • I mean, I hear what y'all are saying, but Derrick could have been positive without being negative.  He essentially accused people of not seeing Bryce's improvement because of their desire to not be wrong. He could've kept it about Bryce and the team. For example, he could've said: "Bryce has made strides, and we believe in him. This coming season, his continued improvement will turn a lot of people into believers."  That would've been supportive of his teammate and sent a message to the doubters. That being said, his tact almost summoned and left the door ajar for more skepticism. That's my take anyway. Bryce has improved from the bottom to perhaps skirting the line between the bottom third and mid-third at best...after three seasons. We've all seen it. Yay! In my mind, Bryce has still got a long way to go and a short time to get there, but my expectations are top five--at least top 10--always! Yes, I am a fan, so there's that, but I don't believe it's unreasonable to expect excellence. Hopefully the Panthers FO has the same mindset (and that doesn't even necessarily have anything to do with what we gave up to acquire him). That is the lens I'm looking through. Derrick Brown has his homer glasses on. He just needs to be more diplomatic and thoughtful with his words in my opinion, but I get it that he's a good teammate.
