Laptop recommendations?

A few days ago my not even a year old HP Notebook messed up on me for the second time. I've had enough and I'm going to buy a new one soon. I really want a MacBook but the price for them is a lot!!! Is it worth the buying one? I don't necessarily want an Apple MacBook, but at this point I'll take whatever works better than a laptop running Windows 10. Let me know what you guys suggest I go with or recommend me.

I just bought an iPad when I got to the point where I needed one.  I am done with laptops.

Depending on what you need it for that may not work.  If it does work for you though then I would recommend it.  I have never liked Mac computers or the iPhone, but I love my iPad (Apple TV kicks ass too).

I have a 2010 macbook pro that still runs great, people hate on it for some reasons, but its by far the best laptop I've ever owned.

with that said I am currently planning to get a tablet to replace it since tablets are more travel friendly.

Any of the apple family is a good choice, but cost is always a consideration with those.  I bought a MacBook Pro with Retina 3 years ago and it's run like a dream ever since.  

A Lenovo product or a Surface Pro/Surface Book would be nice options as well.

One of the cheapest ones I seen was a MacBook Air for $999. If I use the student discount I get a $50 discount, but with NC state tax applied, I'll have to shell out $1000 for it. 

I am leaning towards a Surface Pro/ Surface though. Seems like a good second option IMO.

P.S. Also when it comes to laptops/PCs, I generally don't touch it if it has less than an i5 and 8 gigs of RAM, and if you're selling a PC like that with a 5400 RPM HDD, there's a special place in hell for you.

Had my MacBook Pro since mid-2010 and  the only upgrade I have had to do is swap out 4 for 8 gigs of RAM and swap out the HDD with a SSD. 

 

Runs perfectly. $1,100 initial costs followed by $200 in late-life upgrades leaves me at $1,300 for a machine that has lasted almost 6 years now. I'd say hats a pretty good investment.

I've got a 7-8 year old Sony Vaio that is still going pretty strong. It has easily been the most durable and versatile laptop or desktop I have ever owned. I spent a pretty penny on it back in the day (over $1k IIRC) and it has been worth it.

FWIW I still run Vista on it too, and IJDGAF TBQH... I even have the Windows 7 upgrade disc that they mailed to me as a part of a promotion (free upgrade when it was released) and I just never installed it.

I use that sumbitch to make music, play online games, stream movies, etc. No problems.  You might could find you a good refurb or a used one somewhere and save a lot of money in the interim.

Bought an ASUS for the wife for Christmas, and I'm very happy with it so far.

Only downfall is the speakers, but most use headphones these days anyway.

Poo is just expensive if you want somethign really nice...but I guess that's why they're expensive.  I just knock about with a cheap piece of crap that let's me hang out here.
