Bersin's Contract status?

Spotrac also erroneously lists him with the RFAs, despite him being listed as an ERFA on his individual page:

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/rfa/carolina-panthers/

Despite being in camp for 4 years now, he should only have 2 seasons accrued based on actual time with the 53. Based on the rules for free agency, that would mean he is - again - an ERFA.

I remember the report that he only got a one year deal last season, as Fozzy was the only one that got more than one year. So unless that original report was wrong I suspect he's an ERFA.

Bersin doesn't suck....he was never called upon to be a #1, #2, hell not even a #3...he came in as a possession receiver and did a hell of job on 3rd downs when called upon...rarely dropped a pass.  He was forced into the return game because of other player's injuries and he wasn't great at it. But overall he did exactly what he was called upon to do and did it well.  He was a team guy and well liked in the locker room. There's no need to bash him. Somebody else talk negatively about Sunshine and I'll come to your house and throat slam you.

Just kidding...I'll just throat punch you.

yeah that makes more sense. He has to be an exclusive rights guy.

Why is everyone killing Bersin? He is not a bad player and he has done everything that's been asked of him. Plus he is one of the only receivers who can consistently catch a fireball from Cam on third down. As long as they keep him from fielding punts he is not a bad #6 receiver.

Damn... It's like you people expect every 6th string receiver to be Calvin Johnson.

Bersin is a good hands guy. I'm going to say with the amount of drops this year, he probably has the best hands in the WR corps.

It won't be a huge hit if he isn't resigned, but the guy was dependable. He doesn't deserve the amount of disrespect he has gotten from some posters.

Who cares? non active #5/6 WRs aren't a big deal and are easy to find.

Given my spreadsheet-loving mind, I like my data to be neat.  So, really just trying to clear up the confusion of his contract status.

But I do admit too that his story of being an UDFA and a local guy from Charlotte and a player from Wofford has interested me in his career more than would be normal for one of the guys near the bottom of the roster.

Hey all, quick question.

Brenton Bersin's contract status seems to be reported differently on different sites.

Spotrac has him listed as a exclusive rights restricted free agent:  http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/carolina-panthers/brenton-bersin/

Over the Cap shows him as being under contract for $600,000  http://overthecap.com/player/brenton-bersin/2813/

Bersin is not listed on several of the free agent lists posted (eg. at the Observer http://www.charlotteobserver.com/sports/nfl/carolina-panthers/nfl-blog/article60123511.html

or BBR  http://blackandbluereview.com/a-quick-peek-at-the-panthers-upcoming-free-agents/ )

Anyone out there know the scoop?  All I can find on Panthers.com is that last year on March 9 he signed a 1 year contract.

http://www.panthers.com/news/article-2/Panthers-sign-four-exclusive-rights-free-agents/82828363-7413-407c-a1b6-659af785ed77

As an ERFA, the team owns his rights as soon as they tender a contract for the league minimum. None of the salary is guaranteed, so there's no impact from changing your mind later. The player basically has no option if they want to continue in the NFL. Some of your sites appear to operate on the assumption that we will keep him others apparently won't list him until we do.  Since his contract will be so low it will not even reach the top 51 for cap purposes, we'd be crazy to just let him walk when we'll need camp bodies.

Some people only care about the stars, others the starters, and then there are those of us that are just crazy enough to like tracking the contracts and statuses of the 53 (soon to be 90), practice squad, injured reserve, etc.

Different strokes.
