Bersin's Contract status?

As an ERFA, the team owns his rights as soon as they tender a contract for the league minimum. None of the salary is guaranteed, so there's no impact from changing your mind later. The player basically has no option if they want to continue in the NFL. Some of your sites appear to operate on the assumption that we will keep him others apparently won't list him until we do.  Since his contract will be so low it will not even reach the top 51 for cap purposes, we'd be crazy to just let him walk when we'll need camp bodies.

Good stuff

In the "Ask Bryan" mailbag feature at Panthers.com today, the question of Bersin's contract status was raised (why he appears on some free agent lists, not others).  Bryan Strickland replied that Bersin is not a pending free agent.  Not quite sure why, (I would assume he'd be like Ben Jacobs and be an ERFA) but it will become clear in time, I suppose.

Hello Bryan, I was wondering if the NFL has put out an official Panthers free agent list. Many websites have lists but have incorrect information. As an example: Benton Bersin is listed as a restricted free agent on some lists and listed as not a free agent at all on others. Would you have the official list? – George in Orange, Calif.

Bersin is not on the free agent list, but 17 other players who ended the 2015 season on the Panthers' roster are potential free agents if they are not signed to contract extensions or tendered contracts prior to the start of the new league year on March 9.

Here's the list, which would have included J.J. Jansenicon-article-link.gif if the longtime long snapper hadn't signed a five-year contract earlier in the day:

Perhaps if he had played in the Superb Owl, we would have won. I'm kidding, but...

If he hangs on to only one of Cotchery's multiple drops (I'm counting the reviewed play as a drop since he initially bobbled it), the complexion of the entire game is changed. I like Jerricho but he did not have a good game.

What is so funny?

Is Bersin a top flight WR, probably not but he is a good possession receiver.  Has outstanding hands and runs great routes. Most importantly, he has Cam's trust.

We have gone from WR needy to looking pretty good so finding Bersin a spot looks pretty slim but Bersin is a good receiver.  I would like to see him go somewhere that needs receivers.   I think he would fit in.
