The Ron Rivera Connection and Parallels With The '85 Bears

If you're a football fan, you know about the '85 Bears.  But, in a moment of boredom last night, despite having watched numerous documentaries on them over the years, i decided to watch the 30 for 30 about them that came out Super Bowl week.  Obviously, with it airing leading up to our big game, and having felt i already knew all there was to know about them, i decided to DVR it, and maybe i'd check it out one day...  so, i finally watched it last night, and man, i see so many parallels with that team and ours.

First, being that i was about 1 to 2 years old at the time, i had no idea what the team was like leading up to '85.  Turns out, a lot like we were before Cam, Luke, etc, and even in their first few years.  Young, growing pains...  can't finish.  Then the culture started to shift.  In '84, they made the playoffs but were embarrassed by Bill Walsh and the Niners...  I'm starting to see the Broncos as our Niners.  If i'm not mistaken, the Bears were shut out and unceremoniously booted from the 84 playoffs by those Niners.  And to further add insult to injury, once the game was well in hand, Bill Walsh inserted a lineman in the backfield at the end of the game to completely hammer the Bears D to finish them off.  Ditka and the team didn't take to kindly to that.

So, in '85, obviously, you know, things started coming together.  The team knew they were for real when they met up against San Fran in the regular season and convincingly beat them...  and to hammer home their point similarly, they inserted the Fridge into the backfield to drive home their point and send a message.

Anyway, i see Denver as our San Francisco.  We play them in the regular season coming up this year, and what better way to come out and make our statement than completely destroy and humiliate them like they (and their refs) did us in the Super Bowl, ending our magical season.

There were also more similiarities...  i see a lot of parallels between the personality of our team and theirs.  Cam is obviously a million times the player McMahon was, but personality-wise, they are both brash and unapologetic.  Watching the doc also refreshed certain things for me that i had otherwise forgotten.  Like, one of the greatest men in the history of the national football league, and renowned sportsman, Walter Payton actually avoided the media and locked himself in a broom closet following their Supet Bowl WIN.  Why?  Because he was the Chicago Bears during all those thin, unsuccessful years.  The Bears had no offense outside of Payton, and thus, he took beating after beating, week in and week out (sound familiar?).  So, when they finally won and reached the biggest stage, he was disappointed that he didn't score in the Super Bowl.  A team PR guy had to get him to come out to do interviews...  so, if Walter Payton can do it, why can't Cam?

Anyway, i see this year as though it were our '84, and next year is our '85.

Oh, and fug Goodell, the NFL, Cletus Blakeman, and the Broncos.  The end.

Nice write up.  I agree with the exception of Jim McMahon.  Yes, Cam is every bit as good as Jim but Jim had more of an in your face demeanor.  Loved his headbands.  Sent many a message and paid many a fines because of them.
