SI.com's Panther draft needs

Carolina Panthers
Biggest need: Offensive tackle
Other needs: Cornerback, defensive end, safety, wide receiver
The Super Bowl made Mike Remmers come off as more of a liability than he really was last season. However, he only got a one-year tender as a restricted free agent and Michael Oher is problematic on the left side, too. That said, safety could be the focus in Round 1, depending on how the board falls. The Panthers voided Roman Harper’s contract after the 2015 season ended, so the starting job next to Kurt Coleman is up for grabs. The retired Jared Allen only produced two sacks during the regular season—losing him won’t dismantle the pass rush. However, that group is not exactly swimming in depth. Wide receiver is a bit of a throw-in—if Kelvin Benjamin comes back healthy in ’16, the receiver outlook shifts from decent to strong.

Mock draft history: RB Derrick Henry (Farrar, April 8), DE Kevin Dodd (Burke, April 6), OT Germain Ifedi (Banks, March 30), Dodd (Burke, March 23), Dodd (Burke, March 16), OT Jason Spriggs (Burke, March 9), Spriggs (Burke, March 2), Spriggs (Burke, Feb. 10)

Our biggest need is punter...in that we need to find one. I can't think of any other position that is a need on that level.

No, I am not proposing a draft pick on one...at least not before the 7th.

Our only real needs are #2 TE (Dickson is terrible) and MAYBE strong safety if Boston doesn't work out (and he's graded out pretty well so far.)

Other than that everything is just depth or planning for the future if we lose current players, no immediate need.

So long as we re-sign our own guys down the road I don't see DE, OT, WR or CB being needs at all.

We need upgrades at SS (someone better than Tre,) OT (a rookie to start for Oher after his contract expires...and I'm hoping Williams will surpass Remmers this season but we still need depth across the OL,) WR (someone who is better than Cotchery and CBrown,) and possibly DE because CJ has been playing more like VJ.

it would be nice to have insurance for losing one of our twin DTs in the case we can't sign both of them.

    • This is from 5 months ago. It was one or the other. Trade for one or draft one. We apparently called the Jets about Wilson. We also talked to the Seahawks about Metcalf. Drafting our own guy was the best course of action given the required investment. Regardless now is the time for Bryce Young to produce. We are fourth amongst all teams in cap spending on the OL. Back to back first round picks at WR and multiple young TE draft picks now. Very solid and respectable backfield. New pieces across the defense. The time is now.
    • That was just the worst time to have their worst game of the season. One key deal was the broncos guess the Panthers would NOT change any plays or flow to the game. Another key point overlook that bronco defense was truly one of the best in the NFL history. It was the best defense the Panthers faced that year, by far. They were not ready for it, but broncos were ready for the Panthers. Mix in that bad luck, poor refs showcase, and this is the golden boys last game........ Panthers needed to win by 20 and the broncos defense was not going to allow that.  Panthers were the faviotes and I believe they also thought that it was going to easier than them destorying NFC playoff teams as they marched to the SB. I've heard darin Gantt say the play calls were to give remmers help, but for some reason the team never did it. During the year they never had that problem, so maybe never practiced giving help via TE/RB, or WR chip. Cam was superman that year, no need for any adjustments...... Until you meet a legendary defense with studs at all levels, Think about it, Peyton was throwing wingless dunks for the whole season, the defense had to carry his corpse to the SB. That's how good they were, no many defense are able to get to the playoffs and win a SB without decent QB play. If you recall the beginning of that denfese took Tim Teblows and his non-throwing arse to the playoffs couple years before. That's insane the level of defense needed to overcome.
    • Who cares if he paid for such small benefits out of his own pocket? The NCAA is a joke. They need to be offering such anyway, especially for Uber rides (which actually seems like a good idea).
