(In a whispered voice... ) "And now, if you look carefully and quietly through the branches... there! There it is! Amidst the huddle is a perfect specimin of the Common American Pedant!"

I wouldn't want it to read that way, but there is a big difference.

If memory serves, they went younger on a couple of spots in the defense, and made 1 or 2 key offensive line changes.  Might not sound like much, but little things like that can be the difference between winning and losing.

3 out of 5 OL positions had different starters by the end of the season and philly brown was starting to see the field more.  plus bene, tre boston, and kony ealy were starting to get more opportunities.  it was a tale of two different teams basically.

Lol the Gettleman defense force comes out. There is zero excuse for going in to the season with Byron Bell and Nate Chandler as your starting tackles with a receiving corps that had ONE prospect and that's it.

That's a complaint, not a detailed explanation.

I see you didn't provide the requested detailed explanation because you were too busy with your XBox controller in your hands.

well let's think back to what was being discussed by the armchair GMs on this site at the time.

basically we should have spent up to the cap retaining smith (who would have had at least a $6 million cap figure in '15 even if he had retired after '14), lafell, munnerlyn, mitchell, and ginn while also bringing in anthony collins.  extending our MVP first team all pro quarterback and defensive MVP middle linebacker should have taken a backseat to keeping a roster filled out by spare parts together at all costs.

at least gettleman's fugups only have short term effects.  the bell/chandler shitshow lasted like three quarters of one season and that's it.

I agree 100% about Tomlin.

All I'm saying is if your grade is heavily influenced by Super Bowl rings, well, he's got a lot of influence.

True, but my beef with Tomlin is that he's not one of the guys who had to take on a garbage team. He was handed a team that had just won the owl from a retiring Bill Cowher. He did take them there again, but he always loses a few points in my book for not taking on that 2-14, 4-12, 1-15 team.

I don't understand the infatuation the media has with Arians. He has literally been anointed in Arizona for wearing a cool hat.

Dont get me wrong, I think he is a very good coach, but it's not like he took a 2-14 team to the playoffs three straight years or won 15 games in a season.

Heck, He's not even won the NFC West Division, he's the Best Man to Pete Carroll's Groom in that division. Til he wins the NFC West Division, a playoff game, he will be mention as one whose team can't get it done when it counts the most.

Like last season?

Of the available free agents and draft picks from 2014, which one(s) would you have brought in to fill in at LT and RT? (Hint: there's a reason teams made runs at the OT position in the 2015 draft - there was a shortage of them in 2014.)

We went into the season with Kelvin Benjamin and Jerricho Cotchery as our starters at WR. Benjamin was an unknown, but he showed the coaches enough during the offseason. Cotchery was coming off a season where he scored double digit TDs as a backup possession receiver. We also brought in Jason Avant, who was a serviceable possession guy. Philly Brown was brought in for his speed.

So, you had KB and Olsen as big end zone targets. Cotchery and Avant as the guys who can make a quick grab to move the chains. Brown was the deep threat. Considering we hadn't developed a WR in over a decade at that point, we had to start somewhere - KB and Brown were as good as it was going to get in 2014.

really the big screwup was on the offensive line, and there are a bunch of other factors at play there.  coming up with an opening day roster isn't a conspiracy of one.  position coaches or rivera could have talked up bell/chandler a bit too much in an attempt to convince themselves they were going to work out and gettleman trusted their opinions.  gettleman risks undermining rivera by trying to strong-arm him when it comes to depth chart decisions, so he likely stepped back.  maybe he knew they were hot garbage but at the same time (rightfully) figured anthony collins as an overpriced bust and knew the other tackles on the market at the time (albert, veldheer) had too high an asking price.  with contract extensions for franchise cornerstones looming he decided to bite the bullet for a season.

there just weren't a ton of alternatives and if somebody wants to stand on their soapbox and yell about how it's "just unacceptable" to line those two up at tackle without providing a detailed explanation of what they would have done then they can have fun with that; i just don't give a poo.  even a few of the guys that people on this site were wild about during/after the season (like justin britt and james hurst) have petered out.  hurst was one of the worst tackles in the entire league last season and britt started out at tackle, was moved to guard, and ostensibly is going to be tried at center this coming season.  meanwhile trai turner was a pro bowler.

You can try to defend it all you want, anyone with a brain knew it was garbage. His ego has fuged over this team many times.

So, who would you have brought in? Keep in mind the cap space we had in 2014.

Turn the garbage into facts.

Yet, for some reason, you still haven't been able to provide us your amazingly brilliant alternative plan.

Curious.
