OTA Meda Day Today

Sounds like the defense was missing Ealy & Short....

No news on how Daryl Williams has been playing... but a nice pic:

Nickel is worrying:

(Voth tweeted out that second tweet in response to a question about whether Colin Jones was ahead of Sanchez on the depth chart at Nickel.... we all know Jones looked pretty poor at Nickel after Bene was injured, so... something to keep an eye on.)

On the other hand... confirming what Jeremy has been writing about Funchess' progress, Ron talked about how great he looked today:

Ron was asked about KK's absence....

CHARLOTTE – On Tuesday, head coach Ron Rivera addressed defensive tackle Kawann Shorticon-article-link.gif ’s absence from the third week of organized team activities.

"Well, because it’s voluntary he decided not to come," Rivera said. "It’s one of those things that he’s got to decide what he wants to do. Because it’s voluntary, we’re not too concerned about it."

Short, a former second-round pick, is on the last year of his rookie contract. The Pro Bowler led the team with a career-high 11 sacks in 2015.

"We’ll coach who is here, and that’s the truth of the matter," Rivera said. "You’d love to have everybody here, but again, this is voluntary."

Rivera said he hasn’t been given any indication if Short will take part in next week’s three-day minicamp to close Phase Three of the offseason program.

"But next week is mandatory, so we’re expecting him here," Rivera said. "He’s under contract, so I’m not concerned. We expect him to do the mandatory things, we expect him to be where he’s supposed to be."

Rivera also talked about two other defensive tackles.

On rookie Vernon Butlericon-article-link.gif : "You’re seeing a young guy that’s learning and growing. He’s doing some good things and making some mistakes. You see his athletic ability, you see his explosiveness. It’s good that he’s getting opportunities right now."

On Star Lotuleleiicon-article-link.gif : "He really looks like he’s moving very well. You go back to the end of the season, those last four or five games into the playoffs, he looked really solid. He said it’s the best his (previously injured) foot has felt in a long time."

    • That's a very incorrect statement right off the bat, coaches get fired for winning ugly all the time.  Every coach of a playoff team that then gets fired, got fired because they won ugly and didn't improve their players enough to win in the postseason. Guys like Andy Reid have been fired for "winning ugly" like you said, because they kept winning in spite of the improvement of their players. Also, "this is a fanbase starved for wins" is a statement I also don't agree with, I'm not "starved for wins", I'm "starved for a winning and contending franchise" which are two VERY different things. If the team and fans just want to win some games, then that's a loser mentality, sorry, but it is.  We should want to contend, not win a handful of games.  Every time this comes up I point back to the Lions the last 5 years or so.  They were losing games but improving every week while doing so a few years back.  THAT is how you improve as a franchise and move the needle towards contending, not winning games ugly.
    • Good lord. I don’t think I have ever seen a hole that open.
    • this is true.  But NFL Ss and defenses are actively taking that away and playing to take them away vs most teams.  The problem thus far in BY's career......is they are cheating and not respecting the deep game which makes the smaller/mid range game harder to pull off.  and Dallas is an anomaly game.  using those random games that run counter to vast work......doesn't really change the discussion/issues in Carolina.  Bryce Young took the shots this week because they were not just NFL open but college open.    Wide open dudes downfield that really were coverage busts/issues.
