It's not dumb ass, you should expect excellence.  The players expect that, we should as well.  Is it possible every year?  No, but that's what all the players want.  Simple as that.

You're not a player, and please don't try to put yourself on that level.

"It's no good if you don't win a championship! Second place is the first loser!" Blah blah blah blah blah. I've heard all this crap before. It generally comes from people who just like to piss and moan, and they use it to justify being whiny b--ches all the time instead of just enjoying a team's success.

The fans who do this probably think it makes them sound all badass, like someone with higher standards; a player or a coach or a drill sergeant or some such. In reality it makes you sound like the dumbass Little League dad screaming at his kid from the bleachers because he doesn't hit a home run with every at bat.

"Higher standard" fans usually just need to get over themselves.

Yeah, that doesn't make any sense at all.

If it's a smart move right now, under the current circumstances, then it's a smart move regardless of what the team's history is. I don't really give a s--t how it "sounds".

And believe it or not, the Patriots actually do still make dumb decisions despite having Super Bowl rings, as does every other team that's won a championship.

No matter how good your reputation might be, past accomplishments don't prevent you from making present mistakes. Likewise, past failures don't prevent you from making smart moves in the here and now.

i've been saying this for a while. worst case we have short playing with a chip on his shoulder for the next seasons, jettison him at age 29 if he won't sign an affordable deal, get a few comp picks, and roll with butler entering his third year as a pro. hopefully by then we'll have a ring and not be as freaked out about cycling talent since it'll be a proven formula by then.

All well and good, but then why pull JNo's tag?  We have an extra $14 million in the here-and-now and nearly $30 million for THIS year's cap for...what?

So, in the military our standards and core values were "Integrity first. Service before self. Excellence in all we do."  I still hold myself to those standards to this day.  Sorry you don't understand that.

Put together some thoughts on Gettleman and why KK Short has not been signed yet.

Read if you like. Or not.

Good write up, There is def more value in Trai, Norwell, & Ealy > KK. We should lock up Trai & Norwell by end of this season, I suspect Trai will have All-pro season with Norwell having a Pro-Season.

well that's worst case. best case we sign short for 13 or 14 a year and squeeze in trai and norwell too.

also remember we'll get additional cap relief from stew's contract when it's up, possibly right in time to sign kk to a long term deal if we keep him around on the tag in 2017

The scenario the Panthers are in oddly resembles the Patriots in 2015-2016...almost same situations and similar outcomes have already started....

2015 - Patriots don't resign Darrelle Revis in Free Agency (2016 - Panthers let Josh Norman walk)

2016 - Patriots trade their best defensive lineman (Chandler Jones)...A lot of mention was because they couldn't afford to keep him along with other key pieces (2016 - Short not traded yet)

Like Short, Chandler was coming off his best season (12.5 sacks), and the Patriots that year spent high draft picks on defensive lineman as possible insurance knowing that there was a high probability they wouldn't resign Chandler (1st round = DT, 3rd round = DE, and 4th round = DE).

Panthers used a 1st rounder on Butler. Again...somewhat of similar set of circumstances between the two teams.

Revis was actually a high dollar FA, for one year actually, not unlike a tag would have been for JNo.  But Revis was never one of their own.  To bring him back for an additional year would have set the Pats back $20 million.

Jones has drug problems.

I don't feel Gettleman absolutely has to extend him right now, or even this year.

We have options.

But I'm not going to bother with the "well we could let him walk, and there could be little to no drop off between him, and Butler because Butler looks like a beast in non contact drills" rationalizations. Why? Because if there is one thing I have learned over the years through the many many ups and downs of being a Carolina Panthers fan, it's do not take things for granted. The way you think or assume things will play out may end up with you receiving a swift kick to the nards, because well, that's just life.

Still trying to play the "high standards" card, eh?

Sorry. Not impressed.

Players can play that card. Coaches can talk about demanding excellence. GMs and owners can say 'nothing less than the best' and all sound credible when they do so.

Fans?

Fans who act like a phenomenal season that fell one game short of winning it all is somehow "not good enough" to earn the privilege of their special support are just being self-important a--holes.

Hate to break it to you, but you're not a special snowflake. And your 'high standards' don't help make the team better. They'll be just fine with or without you.

The only thing you're really accomplishing is to make yourself look silly.

Oh, so you just ignore the military part of it huh?  You're literally making excuses to make yourself make sense.  I hold myself to those standards, since I was in the Military.  Sorry, I'm not sorry you aren't impressed.  Let it go dude.

    • I had started typing my post hours ago and didn’t finish it and just came back to finish it, posted it, then saw yours and saw we were pretty much saying the same thing - even the games that stick out to us most.  I don’t think a lot of people remember that SF playoff game, but I felt like I had just got mugged in broad daylight.  I remember them calling Mitchell for unnecessary roughness, and then I remember watching Boldin take a super late cheap shot, dead in front of the ref and then showing him watching the whole thing in replay…  the refs let them have a fuging field day and didn’t do jack poo, but if we so much as breathed the wrong way it was fuging 15 yards.  Each team playing under two completely different sets of rules.  poo hurt.  I was enraged.  I’ve never went back to watch either that game or SB50 and never will.  fuging robbery.
    • I’ve said it a million times since, but it’s impossible to keep them from affecting the game.  In SB50, they literally took the game from us, and they did it early.  Cotchery’s no-catch?  The miraculous amount of times we converted for a first down only to have it suddenly called back make it a 3rd down and 15+ against the best defense in the league that specialized in rushing the passer and man coverage on the back end?  And you do that enough times, you kill the morale and confidence of the team you’re doing it against.  It’s telling the one team “you can do whatever with impunity” and the other “you can’t do whatever they’re allowed to do.”  It changes the aggression level.  It essentially neuters one team and allows the other to do whatever the fug they want.  Imagine you call the police for help and they get there and tell you to sit still while the other party beats the poo out of you and you can’t defend yourself.  That’s what the officials do.  There is no way to avoid them affecting the game.  And more often than not, it’s the most subjective calls they use to do so.  Even in SB50…  you saw the Broncos commit more egregious penalties than anything we did, and barely any of it was called.  Their OL was holding all fuging game and the refs did nothing.  We already had our work cut out for us against two future HOF edge rushers and the refs played to their advantage with that.  From what I remember, both Oher and Remmers were called for holding at various times and their hands were in the INSIDE of the defender.  It was garbage, but all by design. Also, if there is any video of it anywhere, go look at what the refs did against us back in 2013 against SF.  The fix was in there too.  They stepped in early and often and ensured we knew we were not allowed to play with the same aggression or intensity SF was.  It was disgusting as well. at this point, I hope Vince McMahon, errr, I mean Goodell just finally scripts us to win it, because this poo is not won via competition or off merit.
    • You can go back to the New York Knicks somehow getting Patrick Ewing.  I saw a story where they place the New York Knick card in the freezer right before the drawing.  It was simple.  Show everyone the cards are undetectable to the human eye.  All they had to do was grab the coldest card. IMO ever since Goodell took over the NFL it has been fishy.  Patriots winning the SB after 9/11, New Orleans after Katrina and Peyton Manning's going away gift against us. The terrible calls during that game were blatantly one sided.  New England should have been stripped of their first 3 SB when they were caught spying on the other team in their SB wins.  I think the evidence against the Patriots was so damning Goodell felt it could ruin football and they brushed it under the table.   In the 2004 SB, How did we go from practically no yards in the first Quarter to setting a record in the 3rd Qtr.  Dan Henning changes the game plan.  IMO probably the greatest half time adjustment of all time.
