Cam's 2015 QB rating best-ever for Panthers

This news that Cam led the 2015 Panthers to the team's best-ever QB rating probably isn't a surprise to most Huddlers, but still I had fun looking at the history of the Panthers' quarterbacks and their performances as part of my season-in-review series.

Here's an excerpt:

Cam Newton had the best-ever QB rating for the Carolina Panthers in 2015

Can he keep up such success?  Some statistics help us examine that question:

As part of my Carolina Panthers 2015 “Season-in-Review” analysis I’ve been browsing through lots of the team’s statistics using the great charting feature at Sporting Charts which automatically creates graphs for various statistics over the course of the team’s history.

One graph caught my eye this morning.   The Panthers QB rating over the course of the franchise history:

Carolina Panthers Quarterback Rating 1995 – 2015:

Data from Sporting Charts.

If I’d thought about it, it probably should have been obvious that Cam Newton’s 2015 performance would have produced the best-ever season QB rating for the Panthers, but still it was a surprise to see just how huge a jump the team’s QB rating took.   The cliche “he took his game to a whole new level” in this case is very very true.

Carolina is entering new territory as a franchise with Cam.  Basically the Carolina Panthers have never had a good, young, healthy QB in the prime of his career who has already excelled but still has room to improve.   For those who may be somewhat recent Panthers fans like myself, it’s a good exercise to go back and look at Carolina Panthers QB history to add a little bit more context to the data points on that graph above:

Comparing the Panthers' team QB rankings with teams like Green Bay & the Patriots really does suggest that Cam still has room to grow...  a very scary thought.  We are just beginning to see something like real elite QB play from a Panthers' QB.  Here's hoping Cam will continue to excel and get even better than his MVP season.  Barring injury (God forbid) I have no reason to think it won't happen..

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
