Possibly working on trade.

I really don't want to believe this but it does make sense. If it was a legitimate injury I feel we would have more info than "soreness" whereas if a trade is in the works holding him out makes sense. All I can say if we do move him we better get a lot back because otherwise it makes the team look incredibly cheap to cut Josh and dump KK within a few months of each other.

Unless the Bengals were willing to move Eifert or the Lions Ansah, top 50ish young players also still on rookie deals at positions this Super Bowl or bust team could use help, there's no other deal in the universe of realville.

Oh I agree there likely is no fair deal out there for him. But if gentleman views KK as gone after this season it's possible something more than a third rounder and help at a position of weakness is enough to make him pull the trigger. I will probably hate any trade involving KK but it just seems odd he has missed so many days for such a vague injury, hopefully this is all an overreaction on my part.

Do we seriously think we are going to trade short now? Butler isn't close to ready. I like Butler a lot, but he's a rookie. It took Short until his 3rd year before he became the dominant DT he was last year. Butler will (being positive) get there eventually and maybe earlier than Short, but for this year, no chance. As posted above, unless we are getting a young pro-bowl type player out of this or 2017 and 2018 first round picks, this is a silly discussion. I don't see that happening at all.

If we trade him, it would be after this year and after we slap the tag on him. I still think we'll work out a deal. I think Short and his agent should come to the realization that he'll be 29 if he plays our this year and next year on the tag. No one is going to give him a Fletcher Cox deal at 29. Cox is 25 and he'll be 31 in the last year of his 7 (* he's playing 2016 under his 5th year option) year extension. Short would be 31 in year 3 of an extension. Huge difference and might be why DG is giving a huge deal some pause with Short.

If I'm thinking like a GM, I'd rather get the best two years Short will give us for $7-8M per season and then get a 3rd round compensatory pick than be on the hook for some $16M seasons where he's in decline.

I see this thinking thrown around a lot, and although it is quite valid, G-Man has to balance out this type of leverage with taking care of a player that has shown dominant play while being a great team player.

Yes we can tag Short for two years and let him hit free agency when he is at the end of his prime, but we shouldn't set out to screw a man out of millions because we are cheap either. That isn't a good look.

G-Man always talks about the importance of the Hogs, so if he doesn't get a deal done with Short, he will look cheap. That was the excuse with Norman: his value wasn't as high because he is a corner. Well Short plays a position valued the most. You need to pay him.

Interesting point. But there's one thing you mentioned that i have heard everyone say that just doesn't jive and that is that KK wasn't that good as a rookie. Obviously this true and he has come a long way since his rookie year. But he was still a pretty great player as a backup his rookie year. Maybe I am remembering wrong, but I think KK was much more promising in his first year than Butler has appeared in camp and even more, and that a lot of us were more high on him than on Star their first year.

I'll keep fingers crossed for Butler. It's obviously too early to say, well anything about his development but I feel like here have been a lot of comparisons between him and Short that I don't really get.
