Wow a lot of very generous people on here.

for all the charlatans in this thread - do you tip everyone in a service role? Your bus driver? Travel agent? Police man? Teacher? Builders? Should we just add 20% on to all services that we buy? Maybe you guys should just pay an extra 20% tax and save yourself the hastle?

Actually, I buy lunch for a police officer, fireman, soldier, etc every chance I get.  I probably average 2-3 a week.  They put their lives on the line for us every day and are underpaid.  Just my small way to say thanks.

Sounds like you guys should spend all this energy protesting for a minimum living wage instead of arguing with everyone on here about tips. To be honest I'm not sure I believe you that people earn that little but I guess here in the UK we introduced a minimum wage a while back to make sure employed people didn't need to rely on the generosity of others to earn a living wage.

Hmmmmmmmm maybe you shouldn't have an opinion on this then since you don't know what people are getting paid in a country you don't live in

Actually, if you stiff a server in a tip you are not only withholding your tip.  You are costing them money.  Most servers are taxed on 15% of their sales.  So, you are taking money out of their pocket.

I already put a link in this thread showing this:

https://www.dol.gov/whd/state/tipped.htm

and comparing the UK to the supposed greatest nation in the world is laughable... We're supposed to have the highest standards here...

But, as you pointed out, laws should be changed. Again, that doesn't excuse people with petty mindsets.

I've waited tables, I've worked behind the line, I've even done deliveries. A tip is something you should have to earn and the standard is 15%, although we've inflated it in recent years to 20%.

I can also tell, based on what the complaint is, whether it is the kitchen's fault or the waiter's fault. If it's the kitchen's fault, I'll ask the waiter/waitress to see if it can be fixed -- if it gets fixed, then the waitstaffer gets an even bigger tip. If it can't be fixed, then I'll either speak with the manager or just let it go. Steak comes out underdone then comes back overdone... yanno, I'll just eat the steak and not make a big fuss. Tip the waiter and go on, but probably not come back to the restaurant if it's my first or second time there. The world is full of restaurants, yanno? If it's a place where I'm a regular, I just chalk it up to a bad night for them -- probably be fine next time.

But if my waiter/waitress disappears for 30 minutes and comes back smelling like the cigarette she just hotboxed, or she's still chewing the fry that she snagged off of one of the plates (yeah, this happens, a lot) or if they roll their eyes because I ask if I could have a refill on a glass of tea -- then I am quickly being reminded that you just aren't really up to snuff at this job.

Either way, he's a rule I go by and it seems fair. A typical meal at a good restaurant should take about an hour of time give or take a few minutes. My maximum tip (unless we're a party of 6 or more) is equivalent to one hour of the pay I get. Really, it's that simple. You are employed by someone else who gets away with paying you nothing and I cannot ethically figure out why I should be giving you more than I would make in the same time.

Bartenders are a bit different, a buck a drink and generally finish off a $10 bill on the last one.

Beyond that, I am not contractually obligated to pay for your mortgage, your rent, your car payment or your coke habit. I came in for a meal, have a good time and I'll drop a $20 or so in your tip coffers if everything goes smoothly. I did not select a restaurant in an attempt to be part of your GoFundMe effort. That's your boss' job.

Who the fug are you, or any of us for that matter, that you get to just go out and demand service by whatever preconceived standards you may have?

That's the whole fugging point of it!!  You go to Japanese steak house for the guy to make the onion volcano and flip your shrimp in the air.  You go to the Olive Garden for the never ending salad and breadsticks.  You go to hooters for the ...the fugging hooters (although I love their wings).

If I go to a restaurant, my food is late, my order is wrong, I never got my drink, when I ask what's the hold up the waitress rolls here eyes, she say's she be right back but I can see her standing in the door talking with another employee laughing, etc..   Each one of those things are going to result in a lowering of the tip till it finally reaches 0.

Why kind of ass backwards society where you feel obligated to tip for something bad.   Hell should we be tipping people who rob us because they didn't kill us?  Tip the mugger because he didn't take our wedding right?  What the hell else are we not tipping for because we should always tip?

Clearly this server knows who D.Williams is, so if I'm serving someone whom I know makes millions of dollars, wouldn't I provide the best service I possibly could to that person who can afford to pay a premium for exceptional service?

To be fair not many people know who DeAngelo Williams is... despite his attempts via social media to change that...

which makes more sense.   That a server would give god awful service to a celebrity...or that DLo is s cheap douche.  I am voting that DLo is a cheap douche.
