Peyton Manning almost (maybe a little) a Panther in 1998.

Wouldn't have been great to get Manning? A QB that gets better, that works to get better. A QB that doesn't sit on past glory and think that's good enough. A QB that doesn't need to be developed for 5 years and then you still aren't sure about him. Boy I wonder if we could ever have a QB like that? Or a Coach/GM that knows how to find one? It would be nice to find out.

poo it would have been worth it to just use all our picks for manning, that draft sucked anyway.

But really we don't need salt in our wounds right now, that kind of news is almost enough to make people /wrists.

i didn't post it to complain or anything. it just thought it was noteworthy. i just wonder how many "almosts" there were with different teams.

I had heard that story a while back, but I'm pretty sure I also remember it being debunked. Mortensen reported back in 2006 that the Panthers were ready to cut Delhomme and go with a first round pick at QB. That story was bogus too.

One that I do know is true (from multiple sources) was that the Panthers asked the league to give them the Colts number one overall selection as compensation for the Colts getting Polian while he was still technically supposed to be committed to the Panthers.

They did get draft pick compensation, but it was only a 3rd rounder (with which they selected Chuck Wiley).

For the record, the Panthers 1998 draft:

1 (14) DE Jason Peter, Nebraska

2 (44) Choice to Miami

3a (62) DE Chuck Wiley, Louisiana State

3b (73) DL Mitch Marrow, Pennsylvania

4 (106) WR Donald Hayes, Wisconsin

5 (136) LB Jerry Jensen, Washington

6 (165) S Damien Richardson, Arizona State

7a (196) DL Viliami Maumau, Colorado

7b (203) Choice to Pittsburgh

7c (228) WR Jim Turner, Syracuse

Both the third round choices were made with Leonard Little still on the board.

The first round selection that season was famously promised to Vonnie Holliday by then personnel guy Dom Anile. Holliday was still available when Anile and the Panthers took jason peter instead.

All in all, maybe we'd have been better off if that deal had existed

    • Aggressive runner, hits the hole fast, and runs angry.  Just a few yards shy of the single game record for the team.  Absolutely phenomenal performance.  If the gameplan hadn't become weirdly pass heavy for the 3rd and first half of the 4th quarters he might have been flirting with 300.
    • I felt that way before the season started, but I'm sorry, he's already proven he isn't that guy, I don't need to learn anything more about him. He threw the ball 30 times today and could only throw for 198 yards, which was his 2nd best yardage game this year, he's just not the guy. Which means this season has already moved onto the 2nd most important thing going into this season after evaluating Bryce, and that's developing our best young players. You don't do that by only throwing 8 of your 30 passes to your best player who is still only a rookie.  Pepper him with targets and help develop him so he's ready to take a huge leap next year when we get a real HC and QB to get him the ball.
    • Every win comes from a non-sustainable source.  As CRA mentioned, Penix absolutely imploding against ATL, and then today, defense finally clicked and looked the best they’ve looked in a long time (and still have up 24 points lol) and Rico ran for 200+ yards.  We’re not going to get that every week, especially against good teams, which neither Miami or ATL are.  Both MIA and ATL are bad teams and Bryce still couldn’t get it together.  The defense (and team) had to overcome 14 points because of his turnovers again.  That was not even an average QB performance.  We are winning in spite of him.
