Derek Barnett is thought of a lot higher as a prospect on internet websites, mock drafts, and message boards than he is in NFL personnel meetings and amongst coaching staffs.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that isn't on the Barnett hype train

Conversations with said individuals.

So just to be clear...you're in direct contact with NFL coaching staffs (plural) and attend personnel meetings?

Once again, just wondering because I see all kinds of posts in various threads about where players are on "our big board" and "inside information" and I just tend to think that if any of it was true, that said individuals would be required not to discuss it on public internet forums...

I'm not very high on Barnett.  Nothing about him is special, just solid.  To me, he's a late 1st, early 2nd talent.  I went and watched his games on draftbreakdown, and very little actually stands out.

First of all, I worry about his size.  I see a lot of Everette Brown in him.  A lot of college production that won't translate to the NFL because he's a true tweener...too small to be an everydown DE in a 4-3 and not athletic enough to be an OLB in a 3-4.  Much of his success was against slower footed OT's that couldn't keep up.  But far too often, when guys got their hands on him, he was done.  He doesn't shed blocks very well, nor is he overpowering.  Sure he got the sacks, but it wasn't because he dominated guys with speed, power, and technique.  He did show good speed around the edge and use of hands, but isn't what I would call explosive.  He was also washed out of plays way too often for my tastes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he is a bad player, but I just don't think he is worth a high pick.  He might turn into a solid rotational player, but I wouldn't use our 1st on him.
