Butler Making His Presence Felt

That's against college level talent, and slightly different from a 4-3 NT. The role star takes is taking hold of space and moving the gaps against 2 or more o-linemen.

One critique against Butler is how poorly he handles double teams. From what I've watched, I've seen him pushed back on most of them. That's why he could not possibly fill that role.

I wouldn't speak in such absolutes. To say he can't possibly is absurd. I'm not comparing him to Star at this point but as has been pointed out hes shown he has the ability to but has been inconsistent.

Yeah, and it's certainly not a size issue because he's just as big as Star and even more athletic.

Butler's a 3 tech, not a NT. He won't be able to fill in Star's role at all.

Kyle Love could tbh, to a lesser degree. But not Butler.

Kyle Love is 30. I would not want to lean on him for much more than giving a true starter a rest. He's performed well but you can't expect him to consistently be able to push (or even hold) a pile for more than a few plays at a time.

I'm just glad Panthers.com put this up because everybody has been focusing on the offense but this defense has a chance to be better than the SB team too. This should be a solid unit at all three levels.

im with ya. i think my lenses are tinted electric blue but even some Panther fans are selling this defense short due to age and depth issues (and those are legit concerns) but man if people can stay healthy and our non-starters can even slightly outperform expectations, youre gonna be right about that "better than the SB team" statement

    • Yeah. How he shows up in training camp with a year of NFL training and nutrition will tell us all we need to know.  Side note... how has Bryce still managed not to find the weight room?
    • I hope he finds his lane in year 2.  Now that we signed Walker, I'm really intrigued how Dan feels about the DL. Is there a piece there in R1 that presents value/BPA and fills a void for one of the spots w/ DB and Wharton.  I'll give Wharton another year to show us why he was signed here. With A'Shawn gone, I don't think BBIII is it.  Our edges are set and our LBs are balanced. Horn/Mike Jack and Moehrig will hold the secondary together. DB is, well...DB.  However, I think this is an area that is the biggest question mark right now. I see 1 of 3 spots that are locked and loaded for us. If we move to a 4 down front, I assume Phillips would slide down to be the additional linemen, but we still have questions about the other two spots in either scheme.  I'd feel better with a tradeback, but I do wonder how McDonald would do here. Maybe Woods....but McDonald really does peek my interest.  Or, can Jackson take that next step. The coaching staff speaks highly of him for what little he played. Here's hoping he stays healthy and comes into TC with something to prove. There's a spot to be taken, here's hoping he takes it.
