I think with us signing Thomas we wont go for smith..but you never know.

Per a league source, the newly-available players are linebacker Roderick Green, defensive end Brent Hawkins, linebacker Vince Redd, nose tackle Shaun Smith, and defensive back Daren Stone.

Saw that earlier.

It would change my entire mood about this team if they were to sign Shaun Smith. Among other things, it would allow them to use Hollis Thomas as a rotational player rather than a starter, a move that would in all likelihood extend his shelf-life with us. The D-Line would go from being a liability to being a strength, and maybe (just maybe) the Panthers could rebound from that 0-3 start and make some actual noise.

Could it be done? With a friendly contract, a restructure or two and a roster move that'd be popular with fans (cutting Nick Hayden) it most definitely could. And I, for one, would be in favor of it.

(which is probably a sure indicator that it won't happen) :mad:

Be assured that if it does happen, it can be taken as a sign that the seat John Fox sits on is at least getting warm, and more than likely is rather toasty.

Smith is suspect, hasn't really produced for more than a few games at a time, has problems with coaches and got busted for steroids this year. He's a legend here, but the league isn't touching him. That should be a good hint.

Right now? No, but I have a hard time believing that Thomas would remain a backup behind Nick Hayden for more than a week; two at the most.

On Smith, I think nobody touched him for the past four weeks due to the suspension that's now ended.

(wasn't honestly aware the rules had changed myself)

Legend? No. Solid starter. I think so. Better than Nick Hayden? Definitely. And in rotation with Thomas, potentially just what we've been looking for.

He's by FAR the best DT we're going to get at this point, just sign the guy already. I know there's the whole character issue and I'm glad we have a standup organization but let's be real, the guy isn't out shooting up strip clubs or murdering dogs. He got suspended for taking a water pill. Big freakin' deal. I don't see the Vikes releasing the Williams wall after they tested positive or the Saints with their 2 DLinemen.

We have our own "water pill" taker on roster, along with a two-time teammate puncher.

There are things that you give second chances for and things you don't. What you have to decide is where to draw the line. Based on what I've seen of Smith - and given our situation - I'd take him.

(but I wouldn't place any bets on the Panthers thinking that way) :sosp:

To be clear, I don't advocate dropping the "character counts" approach. I still thoroughly believe in that, but realistically you have to be consistent in how you apply it.

If you forgive your own kid when he says he's sorry and he won't do it again, then you can't very well hold a grudge against someone else's kid when they do the same thing.

      We need a Sam Off Ball Backer to pair with Lloyd. Lloyd is a strong Interior Will especially in Pass Coverage- but that is also Trevin Wallace’s archetype. Need a Rozeboom style run stopper. Rodriguez and Allen fit that

      There aren’t that many ways to screw Day 2 up.  That’d be them making an obvious reach, or selecting at one of the few positions that we are pretty solid at. Because as excited as we are for the growth and improvement this team is showing, it’s still not an overly talented or deep roster. Honestly, there aren’t really many positions I’d feel bad about. Feelings about Bryce aside (because we are not going to select a QB), it’s really RB (bad positional value) and that’s it. I guess OT too since we grabbed Freeling in Round 1.    While not as high on my wish list as other spots, you can justify WR or TE.     Interior offensive lineman who would likely take over an interior spot either this year (at center) or guard (next for cap casualty of Hunt or Lewis)? Fine by me.   Dlineman? Yes, that’s a highly rotational position and we have zero quality depth.    ILB? Yep, could stand for an upgrade over Wallace.    EDGE? Absolutely wouldn’t hate another option to spell Phillips, Scourton, and Princely.    FS?  Would love to add better coverage skill set to the backend of the defense. Moehrig and Ransom are great in run support but not as good deep. Adding a more traditional FS would allow us to mix and match/run some 3 safety sub packages and or a big nickel type look with a SS down near the line for better run support in possible pass downs.    CB? Could stand to get better at nickel.

      Sounds like Veesaar is entering the draft. He could always test the waters and pull out and return but without him our big men look like a serious liability. Better do something in the portal. If they don't do something about this portal madness my days as a college sports fan are probably numbered. This bullshit of having a nearly entirely new team every season is gonna get old fast.
