In Hindsight, Still Think Keeping Gano over Butker was a Huge Mistake.

How can you be clearly outplayed by someone if you don't even get a chance? There was no competition because the coaches already had their mind made up before training camp.

And no, this is not a "hindsight is 20/20" situation. Pretty much everybody wanted to keep Butker over Gano because, like you said, he was cheaper and younger. It was an easy decision then and it would still be an easy decision now if we had to do it again. Not to mention the dumbass decision to keep Palardy over Lee.

Clearly outplayed in Training Camp*, I thought that was implied.

Cheaper and younger? Is that the only criteria that matters? You wanna roll the dice and cut your vet kicker in favor of a guy who was missing tons of kicks in practice? He was a big question mark so no it’s not an easy decision because he’s simply younger and cheaper.

It was not that hard of a decision. You either go with a top 3 overpaid kicker that chokes in big situations, or go with the rookie who could give you the same production for a fraction of the price while also being younger. Not to mention Gano is a FA after this season and will either be overpaid or let go. That alone should have been more than enough to keep Butker. And don't even get me started on that dumbass decision of Palardy over Lee.

What if Butker turned out to be another Roberto Aguayo? Regardless of how bad Gano was last year, you can still have considerably worse.

And I’ve never mentioned anything about Palardy or Lee.

I would have been fine with keeping Butker as a gamble for the future but every single person who covered camp said Gano had run a way with it and it wasn't close. There was no debate among those who saw them whatsoever.

    • I think the qualification has changed over time though. A deep ball play used to take 4 to 6 seconds for the receiver to get to that spot on the field. Now a receiver can be there in 2.5. That's less time than most QBs have to set and throw. In my mind a deep route takes time to develop. A crossing route and a deep route can't take the same amount of time at full speed. You can have 4 deep balls on the same drive,  almost 5 if you do 5 20 yard throws goal line to goal line. That doesn't even make sense when you say it out loud.
    • The sad part is it looks manicured enough that he's aware it's running away from him.  Also, I just wanted to give you some fun loving grief on King Haynes today having a chance to throw a game winning TD, and was wildly errant, and ultimately picked off to end the game.  So happy I won't have to hear anything else about The Golden Calf of Bristol lite ever again watching college football.
    • I just think Panthers believe in Bryce far more than the fans do and he is most likely going to be the QB at least the next two seasons. the real shot of us moving from Bryce is not getting an extension, till then they are going to give him every chance to succeed and I just want to win.
