Will The Real Cam Newton Please Stand Up?

I have been a Cam believer from day 1.  But I find myself asking since last year.  Who is the real Cam? The one who looked unbeatable against the Patriots and the Lions, or the one who threw 5 interceptions the last two games.

I have never seen him be this inconsistent.  It's time for him to own it and show us who he is.  No more excuses.  Bad scheme or protection aside, he is making bad throws and decisions at the worst possible times. If he is ever to be great, he must be able to overcome adversity and lead this team.  Come on Cam, focus and step up man.

Cam is the most bipolar player on the field ever. He's very rarely just solid, he's either stupid other worldly good, or flat out terrible. It's a pain to watch, when he really should be just damn good all the time, like some of the other all-time greats. When Cam is bad, and it's happening fairly often lately, he is like Johnny Manziel and The Golden Calf of Bristol bad. And when he's good, there's never been another player to play as well as him. Before this year I had never questioned that Cam would be the one to get us our first win, but now I'm starting to wonder if he'll be here after his current contract, and whether we'll win one before then or not...

Disclaimer: Before you all get your panties in a wad, let me share what I think is the biggest factor in Cam's play... TERRIBLE offensive coaching staff his entire career.

1. He's never had a good QB coach to actually teach him how to throw the ball properly and not just rely on his arm strength all the time. Cam wouldn't be sailing balls half the time if he had been taught this correctly from day 1. And not just that, but learning from his mistakes. He had his best year by far in '15 by being patient and looking for different reads, and then in '16 reverted back to locking onto one guy like Kaepernick. This year, he's had glimpses of terrible Kaepernick-like play, and then goes and does something like that unbelievable KB TD in the Lions game where he looked off the safety and delivered a beauty. That lack of consistency is on coaching.

2. The other massive issue is that Cam has been beaten to death as a runner because, yet again, the entire offensive coaching staff since he's been here is either flat out stupid, or lazy, and has only ever built the run game to go completely through Cam without the ability to sustain itself. For all the other great running QBs, NONE of them have had the same type of offense, where it's built 100% around the QB. Cam is the only one in the history of football, and it's not even close. That's a HUGE problem when your QB is being relied upon like he's a bruising FB and is taking hits at an unprecedented and unmatched pace. Sure you can factor in poor OL play too, but many other QBs have had to deal with that. It's mainly the coaching staff running him to death because of their ineptitude or laziness.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
